Job Description
The Department Chair for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPSCI) serves as a senior administrator responsible for managing, organizing, and coordinating all departmental activities. This includes overseeing operations, finances, faculty workload, faculty development and evaluation, and building and sustaining external relationships with stakeholders and partners. The Chair provides strategic leadership to develop and implement departmental goals in research, teaching, and graduate education. They advocate for essential resources, foster collaborative partnerships, and contribute to the advancement of biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences while promoting the department's reputation at the university, state, regional, and national levels.
The Chair works closely with the College administration to support programs, manage facilities, oversee curriculum, and address student recruitment, admissions, success, support, progressions, program assessment, and accreditation, aligning departmental efforts with the broader mission and goals of the College. The Chair supports faculty, staff, and students by cultivating an environment that prioritizes teamwork, professional development, and leadership opportunities. Additionally, the Chair oversees laboratory resources and assignments, ensuring regulatory and safety compliance and proper maintenance. To ensure effective departmental operations, the Chair may appoint members to specific administrative roles in alignment with departmental bylaws, providing equal opportunities for leadership development.
Key Responsibilities
Department Operations (40%)
Management:
- Oversee departmental budget planning and financial management.
- Supervise faculty and staff, addressing personnel matters and ensuring departmental efficiency.
- Approve requisitions, purchasing, timecards, travel, and student petitions.
- Provide administrative oversight of laboratory assignments and resources, including regulatory compliance, safety standards, and maintenance.
Meetings:
- Represent the department at campus site meetings, department meetings, Administrative Council, COP faculty meetings, Dean's Advisory Council, and University faculty forums.
Travel:
- Conduct regular campus visits and attend professional meetings.
Workload Organization (25%)
Academic Program Delivery:
- Lead strategic planning, PharmD and graduate curriculum development, and graduate education support.
- Develop and implement global workload models and guest lecture standards.
Workload Management:
- Establish and maintain departmental workload policies and individual faculty teaching assignments.
- Coordinate course workloads across department sites.
Service Coordination:
- Assign faculty to ad hoc and standing committees.
- Recommend faculty service roles for university and professional organizations.
Faculty Development and Evaluation (20%)
Development:
- Implement orientation, mentoring, and professional development policies.
- Plan faculty retreats and promote teamwork and morale within the department.
Evaluation:
- Facilitate individual faculty development and promotion plans.
- Conduct annual faculty evaluations, 3- and 5-year reviews, and promotion and tenure reviews.
Laboratory Management (15%)
Oversight of Laboratory Assignments and Resources:
- Ensure proper allocation of laboratory space and resources to faculty and students.
- Maintain regulatory compliance and safety standards for all department laboratories.
- Oversee laboratory maintenance and ensure resources meet the needs of ongoing research and teaching activities.
Supervision:
- Oversee the Director of the Graduate Program, Director of the Computational Core Lab, and Director of the Pharmaceutical Core Lab.
External Relationships:
- Maintain communication with stakeholders, including industry partners, professional organizations, and academic collaborators.
Minimum Qualifications
* Doctoral degree in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related field.
* Proven administrative leadership experience in an academic or research setting.
* Demonstrated ability to manage finances, faculty workload, and laboratory resources.
* Experience fostering faculty development and leading evaluations (annual, promotion, and tenure).
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience in research leadership, grant funding, or academic program development.
* A strong record of research and teaching in biomedical or pharmaceutical sciences.
* Familiarity with higher education policies and accreditation processes.
* Experience building partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including industry and academic collaborators.

This position will remain open until it is filled; however, priority consideration will be given to applications received on or before March 24, 2025. Salary will be between $154,000 - $168,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
