Role Summary

The Battery Series Engineering Team is in search of a mechanical / electrical engineer that desires to be front and center in producing one of the most critical components of an electric vehicle; the HV Battery. In this role, we are looking for a candidate that is hands-on, well organized, can collaborate cross-functionally with ease, and can use first principles to drive continuous design improvements to a given component or system.

As Sr. Series Engineer - HV Battery, you will specifically be responsible for the design of HV Battery Packs that are used in serial production at Rivian's manufacturing facility in Normal, IL. This includes components and full assemblies purchased from outside vendors, such as modules and battery packs.

This opportunity will allow you to grow in the electro-mechanical space by root causing functional and component related issues impacting a HV Battery. The ideal candidate will build upon previous design and release experience to lead continuous improvement projects, as well as manage suppliers for change implementation and issue resolution.


Responsibilities

On-site Design Engineering lead of the HV Battery and its associated components in Normal, Illinois through start of Serial Production and beyond:

  • Collaborate with cross functional teams (Manufacturing, Quality, Reliability, T&V, Vendors within Global Supply Chain, etc.) to identify issues, drive resolution, and implement changes
  • Continued optimization of Battery Pack, subassembly, and components and detail impacts to cost and mass
  • Responsible for working with Suppliers, Quality, Launch Teams, and Material Planning to maintain ramp rate through launch
  • Lead recurring Internal and External Design Reviews
  • Lead BOM Management and Change Management
  • Lead DFMEA efforts and support of PFMEA efforts
  • Prepare rework plans and quality requirements for rework
  • Define validation requirements based on design or process change
  • Support HV Battery teardown efforts for factory and field failures
  • Lead supplier engagement activities to drive home changes, monitor line audits and manage part qualifications

Qualifications

  • Must have bachelor's degree with 4+ years of industry experience or master's degree with 2+ years of industry experience
  • Experience with HV Battery design including structural, thermal, and electrical components of a full battery assembly
  • Understanding of battery system architectures and system requirements
  • Understanding and execution of root cause and corrective action
  • Proficiency with statistics and data analysis
  • Understanding of line FAT and SAT
  • Strong understanding of high-volume manufacturing processes and equipment
  • Strong collaboration skills with Tier 1 Suppliers, Design, Manufacturing, Reliability, and Quality Engineers
  • Experience with release engineering including CAD design, GD&T, and PLM interface
  • Familiarity with modeling/analysis tools for structural and thermal analysis
  • Understanding of safety protocols for battery modules
  • Experience with automotive DVP&R cycle, requirements management, and issue tracking - JIRA, JAMA, IQ-RM, Plato
  • Proficiency with CATIA V6 (3Dx) and Enovia

Pay Disclosure

Salary Range for Illinois Based Applicants: $111,000.00 - $138,700.00 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).

Benefits Summary: Rivian provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time and part-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Full Time Employee coverage is effective on the first day of employment. Part-Time employee coverage is effective the first of the month following 90 days of employment.
