Overview

Under the supervision of a registered Pharmacist, the inpatient Pharmacy Technician assists in preparing and distributing sterile and non-sterile medications. The Technician must be skilled in all functions of the department that do not require the professional judgment or activity of the Pharmacist.


Responsibilities

Operational Functions

  • Prepares and distributes medication products to fulfill medication orders.
  • Ensures appropriate and adequate medication inventory by restocking, rotating stock, removing expired medications, repackaging medications, and ordering supplies.
  • Answers the telephone and directs calls to appropriate personnel in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Accurately compounds sterile and non-sterile products, including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition, in accordance with facility, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Performs patient billing in the electronic medical record.
  • Ensures proper medication storage.
  • Maintains a neat, clean, orderly, and secure department.

  • Prioritizes the importance of preventing errors, accidents, and infections within the workplace and reports potential or actual concerns immediately.
  • Completes all competency and skills assessment requirements.
  • Participates in and completes pharmacy technician orientation.

Qualifications

Education:

High School diploma or GED

Experience:

At least one (1) year of hospital or retail pharmacy experience.

License(s)/Certification(s):

* Registration in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy

* Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

* Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.

* Basic computer knowledge using word processing, e-mail, and web browser.
