A Brief Overview
Clinical, laboratory, or research-based Genetic Counselor who provides genetic counseling in the assigned job role by working directly with the attending physician, laboratory director, and other team members, along with providing efforts consistent to the mission of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

This position includes active participation within the Section of Genetic Counseling.

If acceptable by clinical leadership within the GCs Division, this role is able to engage in Incident-to Follow Up Genetic counseling visits for established patients to the practice with returning test results, updating medical and family histories, reviewing testing options, and evaluating familial recurrence risks.

This Genetic Counselor will work in a combination of clinical genetics and mitochondrial medicine.

Our Clinical Genetics Program provides comprehensive diagnostic testing, genetic counseling, individualized treatment and ongoing care management for children with a wide variety of genetic diseases and pediatric disorders. We offer the most complete array of human genetics services in the Delaware Valley for children and their families. We specialize in finding answers for families facing complex and hard-to-diagnose conditions. We work with researchers to improve testing, treatment options and outcomes. And we remain committed to better understanding the genetic basis for all pediatric disorders.

The Mitochondrial Medicine Program at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has emerged as the world's premiere center dedicated to improving the health of patients - of all ages - living with mitochondrial disease. We focus on finding the underlying causes of mitochondrial conditions and developing ways to treat or manage them. Mitochondria function as batteries that produce energy in our body's cells. When cells have low-functioning mitochondria, it can cause a range of health problems and can affect any part of the body. The causes of mitochondrial disease have been linked to nearly 400 genes. CHOP offers multidisciplinary clinical care, advanced diagnostics and therapies to patients and families. Our cutting-edge research is designed to forge new discoveries, deliver novel therapies and improve the health of patients with mitochondrial disease.

What you will do

Clinical

• Reviews patient information, evaluates family history, conducts risk assessment, and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis.
• Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling as necessary.
• Works directly with the Attending Physician assigned to the patient population.

Education

• May assist with education/ mentorship within the Division, along with serving as a supervisor to Genetic Counseling graduate students during their clinical rotations.

Research

• Maybe also involved with research activity related to their specialized patient population.

Education Qualifications

• Master's Degree Genetic Counseling or Human Genetics Required

Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrated ability in counseling, skills, techniques and other related areas.
• Subject to pressure related to emergency clinical problems.
• Must have a high degree of flexibility of skills and hours.
• Prior experience with clinical data or research data is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

• Certified Genetics Counselor - American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) - upon hire - Required and
• Licensed Genetics Counselor - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - within 3 months - Required and
• Licensed Genetics Counselor - New Jersey State Licensing Board - - Preferred
