Assistant Educator - Teacher and Student Learning

Summary: Develop and implement the Museum's interdisciplinary learning initiatives, programs, and resources for preK-12 students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:




  • Develop, implement, teach, and promote in-gallery and virtual programs, tours, and other experiences for preK-12 students including, but not limited to, the Arts in the Basic Curriculum (ABC) program for elementary students, 5th Grade Explorers, No Place for Hate for middle and high school students, live and self-directed virtual field trips, and Exploring with the Artist programs for middle and high school students.
  • With the Associate Educator, Teacher and Student Learning, contribute to the development of a strategy for effectively engaging pre-K-12 students that aligns with the departmental philosophy and contributes to the advancement of institutional strategic priorities.
  • Implement the Museum's strategy for increasing and enhancing student engagement at the Museum, with support and guidance from supervisors.
  • Collaborate with a team of Museum staff, including educators, curators, Protection Services, Visitor and Member Services, Digital Experience and Media, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Romare Bearden Fellows, and Museum Events, as well as Gallery Teachers and volunteer educators, to plan and facilitate in-gallery and virtual programs, tours, and experiences for students related to the Museum's collections and special exhibitions.
  • Assist in the training and evaluation of volunteer educators and Gallery Teachers, particularly for school programs, with specific emphasis on effective gallery teaching and facilitation to fulfill program objectives.
  • Develop new and innovative strategies for engaging students in the Museum and for training volunteer educators and Gallery Teachers in current and best-practice gallery teaching.
  • Conceive of and implement print and digital promotional materials and educational resources.
  • Stay informed on current local, state, and national best practices, trends, standards and policies in preK-12 education. Develop new and innovative programs, partnerships, and resources to support emerging trends in preK-12 education.
  • Identify schools and school districts for sustainable partnership opportunities in collaboration with the Associate Educator, Teacher and Student Learning. Implement in-school teaching artist residencies with St. Louis area schools and districts.
  • Liaise with external constituents, including teachers, school administrators, and partner organizations, to implement relevant programmatic connections for a variety of school audiences based on priorities identified by both the Museum and the school districts served.
  • Identify and contract with teaching artists and representatives from cultural or community organizations as program presenters. Guide these teaching artists in the process of developing curriculum and content for student audiences.
  • Present programs, lead tours, and assist with the delivery of teacher and other Learning & Engagement programs as needed; represent the Museum at off-site conferences and school education programs.
  • Assist with various aspects of Student Gallery exhibitions, including matting and framing of works of art.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams, projects, and initiatives and contribute to museum-wide projects as appropriate.
  • Perform tasks related to Teacher and Student Learning contracting, purchasing, meeting scheduling, and special projects.
  • Coordinate space reservation, registration, transportation assistance, and other details to ensure programs run smoothly and maintain compliance with internal policies and procedures.
  • Assist with preparation of Student Programs budget and monitor expenses.
  • Assist with the Teacher Advisory Group, as needed.
  • As needed, provide narrative and statistical student program information useful for proposals, reports, and presentations.



Qualifications: Required: Bachelor's degree in art history, art education, studio art, museum studies, or a related discipline. Minimum 1 year of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior teaching experience with preK-12 students in a museum, classroom, or informal learning environment. General knowledge of the history of art and studio art practices. Excellent communication, diplomacy, and customer service skills. Strong organizational and time management skills. Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

Must be able to work collaboratively and proactively with diverse colleagues, collaborators, and audiences. Proficiency with in-person and virtual program development, facilitation, and evaluation. The ability to work occasional evenings and weekends. Preferred: Knowledge of other humanities and science disciplines. Prior work experience within a St. Louis area school and/or understanding of local school districts and educational systems. Studio art and classroom management experience. Demonstrated ability in object-based teaching and knowledge of diverse learning and teaching styles. Additional Details:

Hiring Range: $22.42 - $27.47/hour

Status: Regular full-time (37.5 hours/week)
