GENERAL SUMMARY:

Plans and supervises the activities of Chaplains responsible for assessing and attending to the spiritual needs of patients, families and employees, particularly in times of spiritual distress brought on by life threatening or life altering medical diagnoses and procedures. Offers spiritual counseling and support through individual/group work, religious services, hospital celebrations and other supportive methods. Represents Bryan Medical Center within the local religious community and surrounding areas.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Supervises and assigns Chaplain caseloads and work activities; fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Bryan policies and requirements.

3. Ensures that all requests for pastoral care are responded to in a timely manner. Ensures that appropriate worship opportunities are provided and that ritual and sacramental needs are met.

4. *Coordinates and integrates services within the department and with other departments.

5. *Assesses the spiritual needs of patients and families who have identified high risk spiritual care indicators; offers spiritual advice and counsel consistent with the spiritual and religious backgrounds of patient/family.

6. Acts as a liaison between hospital staff and family or friends of patients during periods of crisis, such as death, critical illness, or lengthy surgery; responds to Code Blue and Code Trauma pages as appropriate.

7. *Provides counseling in matters associated with spirituality including meaning and purpose in life, healing, forgiveness and reconciliation; performs or makes arrangements for traditional pastoral services, such as prayer, sacramental ministry and other special services; provides ecumenical services as needed to promote spiritual well being.

8. *Selects a Pastoral Care designee to serve on the ethics committee providing clinical consultation on ethics issues.

9. Assists in developing hospital policies and procedures and standards of care and practice relative to ethical and human rights issues.

10. Uses relevant methodologies to assist physicians and staff in arriving at consensus regarding ethical matters associated with patient care and provides emotional and spiritual support to staff, patients and families.

11. *Facilitates communication with local religious leaders to assure cooperation and understanding between Bryan Medical Center and the local church community.

12. *Seeks cooperation with and schedules various denominations to provide pastoral support and coverage at the time of crisis, i.e. sacrament of the sick reconciliation, etc.

13. Offers prayer support at hospital-sponsored events.

14. Participates in crisis de-briefing sessions with other staff after crisis/high stress situations.

15. Advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education inservices, reading periodicals/literature and seeking ongoing development opportunities.

16. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

17. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

18. Participates in and/or leads meetings, committees, strategic planning and lean projects as assigned.

19. *Oversees the departmental budgetary procedure to ensure proper operational and capital planning; appropriate and efficient use of resources, and consistent compliance to budgetary and fiscal controls.

20. *Responsible for hiring, training, supervising, coaching, mentoring, retaining and evaluating of staff.

21. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

3. Knowledge of bioethical and ethical issues and trends related to spiritual counseling and support.

4. Knowledge of quality improvement, budgetary and financial methods and practices.

6. Knowledge of performance improvement, budgetary and financial methods and practices.

7. Knowledge of management and leadership principles and practices.

8. Skill in conflict dissolution and resolution.

9. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

11. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

12. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

13. Ability to schedule, direct, counsel and evaluate employee work and performance.

14. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteer and ancillary departments including diverse patient populations.

15. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment related to changing patient needs including working with patients with acute, chronic and complex disease processes.

16. Ability to organize and operationalize departmental activities with the broader goals and mission of the hospital.

17. Ability to maintain appropriate records and documentation of department activities which comply with federal, state, hospital, and regulatory standards.

18. Ability to provide age-appropriate therapeutic interventions with patients, including adjustment to illness/hospitalization.

19. Ability to make operational and management decisions in response to changing conditions.

20. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Masters of Divinity from a seminary required. Must be ordained and have ecclesiastical endorsement. Board Certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains required. Minimum of two (2) years experience as a hospital chaplain required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

(DOT) - Characterized as sedentary work requiring exertion up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Requires ability to move between facilities, patient rooms and medical center departments in order to meet patient and family contact needs.
