The Principal Manufacturing Engineer position develops and implements optimal, cost-effective manufacturing processes and methods in accordance with product specifications and quality standards; recommends and implements improvements to production processes, methods and controls; coordinates manufacturing launch for new or revised products.

In addition, his role works closely with Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Quality to identify and alleviate obstacles impacting Production. You will use and grow your technical skills, you will define and implement process improvements, you will generate and improve product documentation, develop fixtures, work with suppliers, and work on cross-functional teams.


Responsibilities

The Principal Manufacturing Engineer position develops and implements optimal, cost-effective manufacturing/production processes and methods in accordance with product specifications and quality standards. He/she will recommend, manage, and lead the implementation of improvements to these processes, methods and controls.

Activities typically include manufacturing process development and validation, troubleshooting and sustaining engineering, work cell/floor layout definition and creation, manufacturing launch of new or revised products and their transition into manufacturing; Developing assembly tooling and fixture design and continuous improvement of products and processes with emphasis on overall safety.

In addition to working closely with floor assemblers, collaborating with the Engineering, Operations, and Quality departments will be essential to identify, alleviate, and ensure timely resolution of production and supply chain related issues.

He/she must be a hands-on contributor with the ability to deliver business results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

In this senior role, you will use your technical skills, you will define, lead, and implement process improvements, you will improve products and documentation, you will work with suppliers, and you will lead and participate on cross-functional teams.

Manufacturing Engineering

  • Take full 'cradle to grave' ownership for tasks assigned, for defects (Non-Conformances) found in Mfg. and Test, and for any projects assigned.
  • Review, approve, initiate, and drive ECRs (Engineering Change Requests) and ECO's (Engineering Change Orders) as required to ensure design changes are effectively identified, integrated, and properly documented.
  • Perform root cause analysis to alleviate and eliminate all obstacles or inefficiencies affecting Production's ability to maintain schedules.
  • Design, develop and test and/or source and cost-justify various tools, machinery and equipment for recommended manufacturing methods as needed.
  • Create/Improve designs and supporting documentation for production in collaboration with Engineering when required.
  • Advocate for, and ensure all results and solutions achieve required quality levels, reliability, and consistency.

Process Improvement

  • Prepares and presents plans for improvements in manufacturing processes and methods (for cost-reduction, quality improvement and efficiency) and coordinate deployment including training of team members.
  • Identify, initiate, and improve manufacturing processes including production flow, assembly methods, safe and effective use of production equipment for quality and efficiency.
  • Work with internal employees and suppliers to develop, implement, monitor, and improve manufacturing processes using best practice tools.
  • Coordinate the design of production fixtures and tooling and specify production equipment, ensuring they meet safety, quality, capacity, and cost requirements.
  • Prepare and implement detailed layouts of build/test cells and equipment.

Project Management

  • Define key deliverables, lead and manage multiple task/efforts through to completion at any given time with minimal direct supervision.
  • Manage manufacturing related projects and coordinate activities with various internal and external suppliers.

New Product Introduction

  • Represent Manufacturing on cross-functional project teams as needed.
  • Coordinates the manufacturing launch of new/revised products including establishing goals, training team members and evaluating results.

  • Mentor and develop team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to drive complex projects and initiatives, ensuring timely and successful completion.
  • Act as a key liaison between manufacturing, engineering, and other departments to facilitate communication and collaboration.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • BS in engineering discipline (Preferably Mechanical, Electrical, or Manufacturing) with minimum of 12 years' experience; Manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience in a manufacturing environment, including managing teams and projects.
  • Extensive working knowledge of mechanical and electrical manufacturing processes, including assembly and testing.
  • Lean Manufacturing or similar continuous improvement / World Class Manufacturing methodology required.
  • Strong project management experience and skills; Experience working in, and leading in a cross-functional environment.
  • Knowledge of MS office products, including Outlook, Word, Excel and Visio.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks 2D and 3D solid modeling
  • Proven experience designing manufacturing layouts using AutoCAD or similar software.
  • Must be able to work and communicate effectively across all levels and functions of the organization.
  • Ability to work with little day-to-day direction; must be self-directed and willing to take initiative.
  • Strong communication skills, including excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and to independently accomplish assigned tasks and work with others.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and methodology.
  • High level of attention to detail.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Not required, but are a Plus!):

  • Experience with Sequence Manufacturing Work Instructions
  • Experience with Agile and Microsoft D365
  • Knowledge of GD&T
  • Experience with and/or exposure to ISO 9001 and 14001
  • Post-graduate courses in Engineering
