Position Summary

The Youth Library Intern assists patrons with general library information, services, and technology needs. Under supervision, they perform circulation tasks such as checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, and placing holds. They also help with shelving materials and may assist with opening and closing procedures.

Additionally, the Youth Library Intern supports library programs and outreach activities by assisting with planning, organization, and event setup or teardown. They may be assigned special projects by the Teen Services Librarian or Supervising Librarian. The role requires maintaining a safe and welcoming environment, adhering to ethical standards, and fostering positive relationships with colleagues and the public.

These tasks are illustrative only and may include other related duties.


Must be a Junior or Senior in High School

Casual, Non-Represented Position

This position has part-time flexible hours during library operating hours of:

9:00am-7:00pm Monday -Thursday

9:00am-6:00pm Friday and Saturday

1:00-5:00pm Sunday

Must meet all qualifications and requirements as listed in the position description.




Essential Functions

Answers patron questions regarding general information about the Library and its services. Makes appropriate referrals to librarians or other staff as needed.

May be assigned special projects by the Teen Services Librarian or Supervising Librarian.

Assists with planning, organizing, and staffing programs and outreach activities, including event set up or tear down.

Under supervision of another staff member, performscirculation functions such as checking items in and out, issuing library cards, and placing holds.

Shelves books and other library materials.

May assist patrons in using the Library's technology or their own technology to access library services.

May assist with building opening or closing tasks.

Conforms with all safety rules and performs work is a safe manner.

Delivers excellent customer service to diverse audiences.

Acts ethically and honestly; applies ethical standards of behavior to daily work activities and interactions. Builds confidence in the City through own actions.

Maintains effective work relationships.

Arrives to work, meetings, and other work-related functions on time and maintains regular job attendance.


Qualifications and Skills

Education and Experience

Current enrollment in High School or equivalent certificate program as a Junior or Senior. Ability to provide proof of enrollment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to deliver excellent customer service to diverse audiences.

Ability to pay attention to detail. Good ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to use a computer to manipulate and retrieve data. Knowledge of computer operations as they apply to the library.

Knowledge of computer hardware and software applications used by the position and the ability to instruct patrons in the use of word processing, spreadsheet and electronic communications, and online databases as required to deliver Library services.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Good interpersonal skills. Ability to get along well with coworkers and the public, and maintain effective work relationships.

Ability to follow directions.

Desire to work and learn new tasks.
