Job Summary

This position reports to the Superintendent of the Grounds and Move unit. This position's primary assignment is to perform landscape maintenance within the UCDH, Sacramento Campus. This position will direct and evaluate all outside landscaped areas and works alongside groundskeeper(s) assigned area to direct, instruct, assist and recommend landscaping designs. Incumbent performs all functions necessary to maintain plant collection health and visitor safety, including path clearing, weed control, watering, pruning, planting, sod laying, mowing, trimming, digging, raking, fertilizing, maintenance of signage, irrigation systems and other infrastructure, and equipment maintenance.

This position provides support for the move crew assisting when needed for relocation or delivery of equipment, move of archive boxes, furniture, inter-department relocation, special events inclusive of setup and takedown, delivery and set up of chairs, tables, stage, and dancefloor.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Valid CA Driver's License in good standing
  • Possession of CA Department of Pesticide Regulations Qualified Applicators Certificate (a qualified applicator certificate QAC Category B) within 6 months of employment. Must maintain throughout duration of employment.
  • No minimum education requirements
  • Minimum of three years of experience in grounds maintenance or gardening; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience and skill to safely operate a variety of landscape tools, tools used in machine maintenance, gasoline and electrical power equipment.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of spray equipment for weed and pest control.
  • Knowledge of pest control laws and regulations regarding safe chemical application and pesticides used including Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plans

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in irrigation maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Experience in the identification, cultivation, and care of a broad diversity of ornamental and native landscape plants.
  • Experience with working in Excel, Word and computer based programs.
  • Knowledge of weed identification and control methods used.
  • Knowledge of pruning standards and best practices.
  • Skills to operate power material handling equipment.
  • Skills to operator forklift, pallet jack, hand truck, and pulleys.
  • Skills to operate truck safely with all Federal, State, County & city regulations and laws
  • Record keeping skills to keep accurate record accounts of labor and time/material costs for each work order assigned.

Department Overview

The Plant Operations & Maintenance (PO&M) Department is a 24 hour, seven day a week operation responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of buildings, systems, and grounds at the UC Davis Health System that includes 148 acres and structures that total 4 million GMSF. Plant Operations & Maintenance is one of the largest operations and maintenance support providers to clinical, administrative, research, SOM and SON departments throughout the Health System. UC Davis Health System is one of several UC campuses that have their own cogeneration, central power plants. Cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power or CHP) is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, both of which are used throughout the Medical Center Campus and is supported by Plant Operations & Maintenance 24x7x365.
