ULAR (University Laboratory Animal Resources) is an AAALAC-accredited animal care program that supports the University of California Irvine's research and teaching missions by providing high quality, humane care for vertebrate laboratory animals, in accordance with State and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to the use of animals in research and teaching.


Your Role on the Team

This position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of research animal facilities, ensuring proper husbandry and cage wash procedures while ensuring compliance with university, departmental, and governmental regulations. They manage the work schedule for staff, support the achievement of unit goals, and provide technical recommendations to management. The supervisor is also responsible for the sanitation of cage wash stations, routine animal care, identifying health or behavioral issues in animals, and reporting them to the appropriate parties. Additionally, they handle administrative tasks such as ordering supplies, maintaining records, and managing equipment inventories. They supervise the husbandry staff, addressing performance issues, providing training, and assisting in the hiring process. The role also includes overseeing the maintenance of caging and equipment, ensuring compliance with regulations, and fostering effective employee relations to maintain workflow. Other duties are assigned as needed.

The expected annual salary range for this recruitment is $69,500 to $80,000.

Required:

  • Working knowledge of animal care and safety and regulatory environments.
  • Working knowledge of facility management.
  • Basic skills in animal husbandry, record-keeping and inventory control.
  • Basic skills in leadership, interpersonal communication, motivation of staff and team-building.
  • Basic analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer competency.
  • Basic ability to identify behavioral or health issues with animal(s) under care and report to vet or supervisor any changes or unusual behavior or physical issues that need attention.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to clearly and tactfully communicate with people from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds in person, by telephone or in writing.
  • AALAS Certification at the LAT level.
  • 3-5 years Supervisory experience in a research lab setting working with lab animals
