Edge AI Safety Internship Summer 2025

Battelle Energy Alliance
United States, Idaho, Idaho Falls
1955 Fremont Avenue (Show on map)
Mar 15, 2025
Description

Is an internship passionate about changing the world's energy future intriguing? If so, we might have just the opportunity you're looking for!

In this paid internship you will secure operational technology (OT) systems that utilize neural network-driven controllers by exploring and developing novel edge architectures. This includes identifying potential attack vectors and implementing robust security measures to protect these systems.

Key Activities:

1. Exploration of Edge Architectures:

  • Investigate and design innovative edge-based AI architectures that effectively integrate existing Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) with advanced neural network controllers.

2. Identification of Attack Vectors:

  • Proactively identify and characterize novel attack vectors that could potentially compromise OT systems within the proposed architecture.
  • Formally describe these attack vectors using formal logics such as Linear Temporal Logic (LTL).

3. Application of Formal Methods:

  • Utilize techniques from formal methods, including abstraction interpretation and Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) solvers, to demonstrate the resilience of neural network controllers against identified attacks.

4. Detection of Attacks:

  • Employ formalisms like model checking and AI tools, specifically graph neural networks, to detect and analyze potential attacks on the system.

5. Runtime Verification and Mitigation:

  • Develop and implement runtime verification approaches to monitor the system in real-time and mitigate any detected attacks effectively..

This team works a 9x80 schedule, and works onsite at our Idaho Falls campus. Start date and duration of internship vary based on project and student availability. You may be eligible for course credit for this internship if approved by your university.
