Position Summary

Under the direction of a Radiologist and/or Assistant Director, perform specialized radiographic procedures. They direct, coordinate, and evaluate the work of lower -level medical radiographers. Employee may also instruct, train or advise coworkers, students, and staff on special procedure techniques using sophisticated equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform X-Ray procedures with minimal assistance which requires knowledge of anatomical positioning and physiology so that independent selection or modification of technical factors will produce optimum results.
  • Plans the scope, emphasis, and objectives of X-Ray programs: coordinates department's technical operations to ensure prompt and efficient patient care, develops and enforces policies and procedures, initiates research projects, etc.
  • Participates in personnel actions such as hiring, transfers, disciplines, promotions, and training. Completes performance evaluations of technologists, resolves any departmental problems or disputes, and designs in-service trainings to keep abreast of new procedures and equipment to meet standards enforced by governmental or other regulatory bodies.
  • Schedules, organizes, coordinates and supervises X-Ray staff.
  • Serves as technical consultant and advisor to the department head in regards to budget and equipment including purchasing, maintaining and regulating X-Ray equipment and supplies.
  • Develops workflows to encompass current procedures and establish electronic medical records based on these workflows and current reporting standards.
  • Monitors and troubleshoots X-Ray equipment, assists with the picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) and web viewing services ensuring that all components are functioning and all external sites are able to connect to these services.
  • Monitors radiation exposure; implements emergency and radiation safety procedures for the X-Ray department.
  • Responsible for quality control of radiographic images for department; designs and conducts quality improvement studies for department; prepares and maintains documentation necessary to meet state annual inspection criteria for equipment and personnel as well as accreditation.
  • Performs duties at lower-level of this series, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    1. Current/valid registration and certification in Radiography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
    2. Current/valid accreditation as a Radiologic Technologist by the State of Illinois (IEMA).
    3. Based on institutional requirements, a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification by an approved certifying board as defined by the employing institution.
    4. Five (5) years (60 months) of work experience as a radiologic technologist with at least two (2) years (24 months) at a supervisory or administrative level.

    Preferred Qualifications
    1. Prior experience in clinical instruction or supervision.
