Position Description
Employees in this classification are responsible for performing a wide variety of patient care activities in an assigned specialty or sub-specialty outpatient clinic. Work is performed under the direction of a licensed staff nurse and/or physician as part of a total health care team in providing complete evaluations to patients. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions, necessitating a high degree of contact with patient, families and clinic personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
  • All Employees are expected to understand and conduct themselves in accordance with the performance criteria for their particular job and with all rules, procedures, and standards of conduct established by the System, University, and the Employee's department or unit.
  • Communicates, reports, and documents accurately, honestly, and in good faith. Performs work in a professional manner and in accordance with expected standards of performance; Adheres to attendance, timeliness, and work schedule standards.
  • Reports patient data, identifies and reports alterations in patient responses to assist in the identification of problems and formulation of goals/ outcomes and patient-centered plans of care in collaboration with patients, their families, and the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Monitors nursing processes to determine patients' and their families' physical and mental health status, needs, and preferences, based upon interpretation of comprehensive health assessment findings. Complies with the identification of patient needs and assists in resolving patient needs or requests within 24-48 hours.
  • Monitors communication of patient data using Electronic Health Record to support decision making for delivery of optimal patient care. Complies with the identification of patient needs and assist to resolve patient needs or requests within 24-48 hours. Implements and facilitates continuity of care. Appropriately documents care provided and patient's response to care in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Works closely with faculty physicians to fill medication refills, schedule procedures, obtain MRI or procedure and lab results then report findings to physician. Assist physicians to develop, implement, and evaluate teaching plans for patients and their families to address health promotion, maintenance, and restoration. Appropriately documents care provided and patient's response to care in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Inspects examination/treatment rooms to ensure they are properly stocked and compliant with infection prevention and control policies. Prepares and operates necessary equipment and instruments for examination, treatments and procedures. Sterilizes and disinfects medical equipment and instruments.
  • Patient Intake - Calls patients back from lobby to exam room. Takes vital signs and measurements then accurately documents in patient EMR. Creates patient in-take form. Reconciles patient medications and updates mediation list as needed.
  • Answers nurse telephone line and triages call. Ensures patient calls are appropriately documented in patient Electronic Health Record and responds to patient.
  • Weekly reviews medical supplies to ensure properly stocked.
  • Monitors schedules, room utilization and clinic patient flow to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Ensures physician orders for tests, referrals and/or lab tests are in the patients EMR.
  • Ensures all joint commission standards are met by all clinical staff and providers.
  • Will train junior nurse team members on new or updated policies or processes.
  • Works closely with physicians to complete patient paperwork.
  • Works closely with Unit Manager and Sr. Clinical Dept. Administrator and Dept. Chair to ensure successful Clinical Operations.
  • Completes Annual Nursing Core Competency.


Required Qualifications
Education:+ Completion of a Board of Nursing accredited program of vocational nursing or scheduled to complete a program of vocational nursing within 120 days of applying for a position.
License/Certification:+ Current Vocational Nursing license in the state of Texas or the attainment of a temporary permit from the Board of Nursing to practice vocational nursing pending full licensure in the state of Texas. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX- PN) on the first attempt.
Experience:+ No experience required.
