Buildings & Grounds Technician (OnCall)

The Position

This position assumes responsibility for the timely maintenance of college buildings, grounds, and other assigned areas at various campus facilities locations, which requires travel between assigned locations. This position carries out the responsibilities in accordance with approved College policies and procedures and in keeping with federal, local and College safety rules and regulations.

What You Will Do

1. Maintains and cares for buildings, grounds, and roadways on the main campus and at satellite campuses including but not limited to: general landscaping activities, cleaning of buildings, hauling and moving of equipment and furniture on a regular basis, and also actively participating in the space preparation including set-ups and break downs for a variety of college sponsored events

2. Notifies the manager on call (or designee), in the event of an emergency, or unusual conditions, including weather related problems, for assignment of essential tasks, responds and reports for duty in a timely manner to help restore or sustain regular college operations

3. Provides assistance with the coordination of all elements involved in the entire work order process including the submission of written work orders from the current CMMS system in concert with the Work Control Desk

4. Assists in managing daily work load as directed by the immediate supervisor (or designee) and works with all Facilities staff in the performance of day-to-day duties and responsibilities as needed

5. Provides assistance with the training and guidance of designated workers on the work order process and established maintenance work routines such as boiler rounds, custodial tasks, and other established day to day activities.

6. Assists the immediate supervisor (or designee) with problem areas and projects needing special attention

7. Stays current on required computer technology and maintenance training and licensing as both evolve


8. In the event of emergency or unusual conditions, including but not limited to snow and ice removal, the Building and Grounds Technician shall respond in a timely manner to the designated manager's direction to report for duty and assist in the essential tasks to restore or sustain regular college operations

9. Assist Maintenance department when required

10. Related duties and projects as assigned


The Successful Candidate Must Have

1. High School Diploma or equivalency.

2. At least two years of verifiable full-time facilities grounds, and maintenance, and custodial care experience in an academic or similar environment.

3. One or more years of experience loading and transporting furniture, materials, and equipment requiring the ability to lift items weighing up to 100 pounds.

4. Valid New Jersey driver's license in good standing.


Even Better If You Have

1. Associate's Degree or Vocational School Certification in Facilities Maintenance or related field.

2. One year of verifiable experience in one or more of the following related fields: irrigation installation and repair, landscaping/nursery care taking, road or concrete repairs.

3. One or more years' experience with snow removal operations, including; operating plow trucks, small tractors, salters, power brooms, snow throwers, etc.


4. Possession of Low-Pressure Boiler Operator's License.
