Description

The Integrated Innovation Institute (III) at Carnegie Mellon University seeks an adjunct professor for our Engineering Design Methods & Tools course during the fall 2025 term. This required course is part of the Engineering Design, Innovation & Entrepreneurship (EDIE) additional major for undergraduate students within the College of Engineering.

Course Description: 49-306 - Engineering Design Methods & Tools

This course will teach engineering design methods and tools from concept to realization. Topics include prototyping, design constraints, material selections, testing, design for production, and manufacturability. The course will address systems design, physical embodiment, and interaction design.

Along with the qualifications below, the final candidate will be available to teach in person from 12:30 to 1:50 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays from late August to late October 2025. This will provide class time for students within a campus maker space for hands-on resources.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:





  • IE in product development.



  • Experience in product design and development, preferably from an engineering perspective or background.



  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an emphasis on agile development and rapid prototyping.



  • Familiarity with CAD tools and design software commonly used in product development.



  • A basic grasp of cost analysis, production design, and quality control techniques as they apply to startups and MVP creation.



  • Previous coursework or hands-on experience in engineering design, systems engineering, or related fields.



  • Exposure to design for manufacturability (DFM) and knowledge of industry-standard tools and practices.




Qualifications

Qualifications




  • Degree in Engineering preferred (various disciplines encouraged to apply)



  • Work experience related to product development and design.



  • Previous teaching experience preferred





Requirements for Work Authorization




  • Applicants for this position must be in Pittsburgh for the fall term and legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.
