NE Renewable Power is made up of 7 Biomass electric generating power stations located in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. These stations play a crucial role in supplying locally sourced renewable energy to the people of New England. Sprague brings over 150 years of energy operating experience to the operations of these facilities, and we're hiring a Summer 2025 Co-op Intern for the Tamworth, NH location.

Our Co-op Internship is a position created that allows an opportunity for post-high school graduate student(s) to gain practical, paid work experience in their field of study, integrating academic knowledge with real world application at the 20 MW, NERP Tamworth Power Generating facility. The student will report to the Plant Manager and the Operations Manager but will also take directions from plant personnel if they are assigned specific tasks with those personnel. Plant personnel at Tamworth fall into several areas of focus such as Plant Operations, Plant Maintenance and Biomass Load-out.

Major Duties/Responsibilities; The Co-op student may be tasked with the following:



  • Safety orientation training of the facility


    • Familiarize themselves with various safety programs such as LOTO, Confined Space, working around moving equipment, proper PPE, etc.
    • Safety expectations are for the student to always ask questions. Understanding the task at hand is critical for safety awareness and assumptions about what's safe and what is not, should never be assumed.


  • Learn process systems and work towards a better understanding of:


    • Biomass receiving and management
    • The Steam and Water cycle and its components
    • How to read prints and P&ID's
    • Instrument and Controls loops
    • The Electrical Distribution system
    • The Turbine Generator
    • Pollution control process systems and components
    • Continuous Emissions monitoring
    • Plant Operations
    • Plant Maintenance


  • Assist as directed in duties required for the safe operation and maintenance of the facility.


Work Environment: Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.



  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
  • 80% of work is performed indoors, 20% outdoors.
  • Noise in the work environment is moderate to high.
  • There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.


Physical requirements: commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job. The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • Must be able to work on feet for extensive periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting 50 pounds.
  • Must be physically capable of wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hard hats, safety shoes, safety glasses, etc.
  • Must be able to work in elevated areas, confined spaces and in extreme heat and cold conditions.
  • Perform repetitive motions as required.
  • Ability to hear and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of equipment.
  • Ability to pass a drug test, respirator physical, respirator fit test (if applicable), and background check.


This position will be based in Tamworth, NH.

Qualified candidates for this role will have the following:



  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license
  • Actively participating in a Bachelor's degree program or equivalent in a technical degree program that has a relationship with power plant business.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to participate in 12-hour shift work as part of the Co-op experience. This may include the night shift.
  • Willingness to work overtime if requested. Hours per week in excess of 40 hours.
  • Willingness to work on weekends
  • The ability to travel to and from the Tamworth facility as required to fulfill the positions requirements.
  • Willingness to work in environments that contain an excess of dust, grease, dirt and ambient temperatures above 110 deg F. PPE will be provided.
