Job Summary

Join our expanding data science team at West Bend and directly impact the profitability of a leading P&C insurer. As a Senior Data Scientist, you'll develop and deploy cutting-edge predictive models for Pricing, Underwriting and Claims, leveraging a modern cloud stack (Databricks, Snowflake, Azure). Collaborate with key stakeholders across the business and utilize your expertise in Python, R, SQL and other modern modeling tools to drive strategic decisions and shape the future of insurance analytics. This position offers both remote and hybrid work locations. Candidates who reside within 50 miles of an office location (West Bend, Madison, Appleton) will be offered a hybrid work schedule (3 days onsite). Candidates who are fully remote (beyond 50 miles) may occasionally be asked to travel to an office.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsible for analysis and modeling of P&C insurance business problems and discovering business insights using statistical, algorithmic, data-mining and visualization techniques. Contributes to organizational performance by providing senior leadership with insights and analysis for decision making. This includes developing and applying analytics, algorithms, or models to key business metrics with the goal of improving pricing accuracy, underwriting/claim efficiency, or answering other business questions. Translating business needs into analytics/reporting requirements to support executive decisions and workflows with required information. Document, present, and support predictive modeling work in a clear manner for business users or regulators to follow. Understands and prioritizes data and information requirements in the development of unique and ad-hoc analytical data. Identifies available internal and external data sources and develops and executes solutions to meet business needs. Collaborates with other business functions to turn high-level concepts into practical model solutions. Distributes best practices to analytics and product teams and provides consultations for their data-projects. Works with vendors to review/evaluate external data and models for potential use.

Preferred Experience and Skills

    6 years advanced analytics/predictive modeling experience with minimum 2 years in P&C insurance context.
  • 3 years property/casualty insurance industry experience
  • Familiarity with property and casualty insurance claim and underwriting data systems and processes
  • Mastery of at least two statistical modeling languages (Python, R, SAS, Matlab, and etc.)
  • Familiarity with MLOps with a machine learning platform (such as Akur8, Databricks, Dataiku, H2O, Amazon SageMaker etc)
  • Experience manipulating large data sets, structured or unstructured, and cloud data using SQL, Spark, Python, or other scripting languages.
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Inquisitive and self-motivated

Preferred Education and Training

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or a related field
  • P&C Insurance credential such as ACAS, FCAS, CSPA, and CPCU etc.

Salary Statement

The salary range for this position is $135,000 - $170,000/yr

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.Compensation decisions are made by West Bend and are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
