Summary

Director, Generation Engineering | Fleet Support

The Director, Generation Engineering | Fleet Support leads a team of engineers and technical professionals responsible for providing comprehensive design and plant engineering support for the Gas & Oil Generation fleet. This role is critical in shaping engineering strategies that drive operational excellence, ensure regulatory compliance, and proactively address fleet-wide challenges. The director establishes a clear vision, fosters innovation, and implements best practices to optimize performance across the fleet.

Key Responsibilities & Focus Areas:

Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute engineering strategies to enhance fleet reliability, efficiency, and long-term sustainability.

Operational Excellence: Identify and implement solutions for fleet-wide technical challenges, driving continuous improvement in engineering practices.

Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure all engineering work adheres to applicable codes, regulations, policies, and procedures while mitigating operational risks.

Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with key stakeholders across operations, maintenance, regulatory, and safety teams to align engineering initiatives with business objectives.

People & Performance Management: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers and technical professionals, fostering a culture of innovation and accountability.

We're looking for engineering leaders with:



  • Expertise in power generationand fleet-wide engineering solutions.
  • Proven experience leading large, multidisciplinary engineering teams in a high-stakes operational environment.
  • Strong background in regulatory compliance within the energy sector, including safety and environmental regulations.
  • A track record of implementing engineering best practices that improve reliability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills to drive collaboration and influence decision-making at all levels.

Minimum Requirements

Director, Generation Engineering | Fleet Support



  • A four-year Bachelors degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA)
  • Ten (10) years power plant operations and/or engineering experience.
  • In lieu of bachelors degree, combination of college coursework and power plant operations and/or engineer experience equaling 14 years.
  • Five (5) years supervisory/management experience with proven ability to develop and manage a high performing team.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of power plant engineering, operations and maintenance.

Major Accountabilities

1) Plans, evaluates and recommends strategies, programs, policies and processes that align and support the overall business objectives.

Develops and manages the achievement of long-term and short-term goals that have a fleet-wide impact.

Ensures plant design basis is maintained in engineering plant modifications.

Ensures engineering work complies with all standards, regulations, codes, policies, processes, and procedures.

2) Provides technical support to plants in troubleshooting, outages, root cause analyses and other areas to optimize plant performance and reliability.

Ensures all plant engineering, operations and maintenance documentation is updated in a timely manner.

3) Provides direction and oversight for system health across the fleet.

Ensures department is engaging in the system health and capital long range forecasting process.

4) Selects and develops a high performing team through effective coaching, performance feedback, recognition, training and developmental opportunities.

Responsible for hiring and salary activities.

5) Full authority for the development and management of the department budget.

Initiates actions in cases of deviation.

6) Provides registered professional engineers for engineering design, inspections or other support as required by law and /or regulatory agencies.

Role Type

Hybrid: Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).

In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location.

*Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).

*Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
