Financial Analyst II

POSITION PURPOSE

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Financial Analyst with a focus in treasury and/or financial planning and analysis to join our accounting and finance team at Madison Gas and Electric Company (MGE). The Financial Analyst is responsible for supporting analysis of the company's cash flows, cash liquidity, and financial statements. This role includes contributing to treasury functions including cash forecasting, bank account management, short-term investment analysis, treasury related accounting, and ensuring compliance with internal policies and financial regulations. The Financial Analyst will work closely with finance and accounting partners to optimize cash management strategies and support financial planning and analysis objectives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Cash and Liquidity Management

  • Monitors daily cash flows and ensures sufficient liquidity for business operations.
  • Prepares short-term cash flow forecasts and analyzes variances to enhance accuracy.
  • Optimizes cash positioning by managing internal fund transfers and external payments.

Treasury Accounting

  • Prepares monthly treasury-related journal entries.
  • Prepares monthly treasury-related balance sheet account reconciliations and direct resolution of bank reconciliation issues.
  • Facilitates resolution of various cash receipt issues as needed.

Banking and Financial Operations

  • Assists with processing and monitoring of cash payments and wire transfers.
  • Ensures compliance with treasury internal controls.

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Performs daily/monthly transaction and reporting processes related to electric and gas risk management and hedging plans.
  • Monitors and assesses financial risks related to cash management and energy related commodity prices.
  • Ensures adherence to financial policies, SOX compliance, and regulatory requirements.

Financial Analysis and Reporting

  • Generates and analyzes treasury reports, including cash position summaries and debt reports.
  • Provides insights into cash flow trends, liquidity planning, and working capital analysis.
  • Performs financial analysis of key financial statement items impacting cash flows and other forecasts/analysis as needed over time.
  • Assists in financial audits and prepares documentation as required.

Process Improvement and System Enhancements

  • Identifies opportunities to improve treasury processes and automate reporting functions.
  • Supports treasury system implementation, enhancements, and integrations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • A four-year business degree with emphasis in finance and accounting.
  • Two plus years' experience as a Financial Analyst or similar role.
  • Experience within the utility industry preferred.
  • Any professional certifications a plus.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to work well as part of a team and possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Evidence of knowledge in accounting, financial analysis, and forecasting.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.) and willingness to quickly learn and understand other financial tools.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish working relationships with other employees and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with a keen attention to detail.

The position is hybrid, and office days are in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, where MGE is an active participant in community efforts to preserve the area's extraordinary quality of life.
