Job Summary
Under the direction of the Product Development Engineering Supervisor - General Market, the Product Development Engineer is responsible for capturing and documenting customer and market needs & opportunities. Conceptualize wire management solutions for customers primarily in heavy truck, solar, railway, shipbuilding, and aerospace markets. Product Development Subject Matter Expert for AS9100 and IATF16949 standards. This will be achieved by maintaining HellermannTyton's IATF16949/ISO9001 Quality and ISO14001 EMS certifications by supporting all corporate policies, procedures, work instructions and required documentation.

Essential Functions:



  • Front-end Product Development. Work with marketing to investigate and capture the voice of the customer, market needs, opportunities, and challenges through innovative, engineered solutions.
  • Design Inputs. Review or create thorough and accurate design inputs and specifications from sources outside of product development.
  • PD Risk Mitigation. Identify and mitigate PD risks early in the PD process to ensure that projects are completed on time, on budget, and achieve expected part performance.
  • Product Development. Design, engineer, develop, and test multiple concepts on each project to optimize the design solution using solid model CAD, simulation software, and any other applicable optimization tools & techniques.
  • Technology & Materials. Research, identify, and recommend, as appropriate, new technology in products, processes, testing, and materials to further innovation and growth of our product lines and processes.
  • Teamwork. Collaborate with Product Development team members to bring customer and project team-approved concepts to production.
  • AS9100 & TS16949. Perform as the Subject Matter Expert in all aspects of compliance to AS9100 and TS16949 for product development.
  • Revise and create procedures, work instructions, forms, development of qualification plans, conduct analysis, testing, and test vendor research.


Other Functions



  • Organize and host Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR's), Customer Design Reviews (CDR's) and guide others on good practices for these events.
  • Assist marketing with determining the worthiness of new product concepts and the feasibility of launching into production.
  • Request and work with QA and validation departments to measure parts, perform lab tests, and evaluate test results.
  • Understand and contribute to the company and department objectives and goals.
  • Travel to customer sites & trade shows to provide HT product demonstrations and provide conceptual routing and clipping solutions.
  • Answer application inquiries, etc.


Qualifications (skills, knowledge, experience)



  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 3D CAD software skills with a minimum of 2 years experience in injection molded product design.
  • Knowledge of the mold building, and injection molding processes.
  • Knowledge of AS9100 and IATF16949 standards.
  • Motivated, innovative, stable, self-confident, and professional.
  • Technical writing and verbal communication skills required.
  • Software skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Capable and willing to travel by vehicle or airplane, domestic or international 3 to 6 times per year.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record along with an adequate automobile insurance.
