Department Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences, one of four departments in the College of Science, has over 40 faculty, 175 graduate and 3,000 undergraduate students. Our faculty is a community of scholars dedicated to research and teaching in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Plant Biology, and Organismal environment interactions. We offer bachelor's degrees in biology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Medical Laboratory Science, and Forensic Science, and Master's and PhDs in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Science. Position Overview

This position organizes, plans, maintains, and oversees both preparatory and instructional spaces for Microbiology, Medical Bacteriology and Organic Chemistry instructional laboratory courses, as well as equipment, instrumentation, specimens, chemicals, materials/supplies, and ensures instructional lab spaces are prepared for use by students and lab leaders. Furthermore, this position purchases equipment, instrumentation, and materials/supplies for the College of Science (COS)-related instructional labs by preparing requisitions and placing p-card orders, receiving deliveries, ensuring invoices are paid in a timely manner, and following all rules and regulations related to UNT procurement and purchasing.

This position trains and supervises student worker/s to assist with COS-related instructional laboratory breakdown, clean-up, and preparation, and receipt and distribution of deliveries to COS-related instructional labs. This position may assist with identification, training, and/or observation of Adjunct Assistants and Student Assistants who lead laboratory sections.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in related field and two years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Working knowledge of equipment and instrumentation appropriate to the nature of the lab and/or the discipline, and of supplies including operation, set-up, storage, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of procedures for safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals used in organic chemistry experiments.
  • Working knowledge of instructional applications related to the laboratory and/or the discipline.
  • Ability to make effective presentations of experiments or software, and provide instruction in laboratory techniques, use of equipment, use of software, procedures, and safety rules.
  • Ability to supervise work performed by others.


Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in Microbiology and/or Organic Chemistry and two or more years instructing, leading, and/or preparing Microbiology and Organic Chemistry laboratories.

Job Duties:



  • Communicate with COS/departmental staff regarding scheduling, adjunct hiring, and purchasing.
  • Guide and observe Adjunct/Teaching Assistants assigned to instructional labs; train and supervise student workers assisting with lab breakdown, prep, autoclave use, and other related activities.
  • Purchase instrumentation, supplies/materials, specimens, chemicals, reagents, etc. according to UNT System regulations and procedures for Biology and Chemistry.
  • Prepare needed materials/items/instrumentation/equipment for assigned instructional labs; test and trouble-shoot laboratory protocols; ensure safety protocols and hazard mitigation procedures are in place; maintain and update lab protocols in conjunction with Main Campus staff to ensure consistency across campuses; prepare and/or oversee preparation of laboratory spaces for use by students.
  • Set-up and maintain inventories according to OSHA standards: chemical, reagent, media, microbial cultures, supplies, etc.
  • Maintain, clean, calibrate and properly store equipment, instrumentation, materials/supplies.
