Position Overview:

The Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM) is a partnership between the University of Chicago and Rush in collaboration with Advocate Aurora Health, the Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech), Loyola University Chicago, and Endeavor Health that's fueled by almost $51 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). We're part of a network of more than 60 NIH-supported sites across the country working to slash the time it takes to develop and share new treatments and health approaches.

Endeavor Health is seeking applicants for a Community and Local Navigator for their ITM site. This position will be focused on supporting the placement, startup, and implementation of multi-center clinical research at Endeavor Health, along with supporting the Trial Recruitment Innovation Office (TRIO) Team on TRIO Solutions Studios, developing solutions for investigators and their study teams for their research studies through target engagement of the community.

The major aims of the ITM are to:

  • LEARN: Help faculty, trainees, and staff to learn how to improve their research (TL1 postdoc, KL2 faculty grants, seminars)
  • ENABLE INDIVIDUALS AND TEAMS TO ACTUALLY DO RESEARCH: Cores, Resources, Advisory Boards, and Pilot Funding
  • WRITE BETTER GRANTS: K grants, R grants, F grants, and others
  • ADVANCE HEALTH EQUITY RESEARCH ACROSS METROPOLITAN CHICAGOLAND: Community-Based Research Network

The Community and Local Navigator's role is to:

  • Work with the ITM Network Capacity and Hub Research Capacity Clusters to assist researchers at Endeavor Health with research navigation support and with outreach to community through the Trial Recruitment Innovation Office (TRIO) studios and workshops.
  • Optimize clinical and translational research in the ITM, especially implementation of human centered system design derived practices for promoting diverse participant recruitment and retention into ongoing research studies.

What you will do:

  • Under the direction of the TRIO Manager, plan, coordinate, and implement all TRIO studios at Endeavor Health, TRIO Tuesday Talks and traveling studios including but not limited to:
  • Soliciting study teams to present,
  • Scheduling and sending out invitations,
  • Assembling and preparing presentation materials,
  • Preparing the studio workspace (both virtual and in-person).
  • Under the direction of the TRIO Manager, carry out all post-studio activities, including but not limited to:
  • Conducting follow-up interviews of with TRIO presenters and study teams to capture learnings and outcomes from studio recommendations.
  • Writing, updating, and disseminating TRIO Studio reports.
  • Transcribing the studio recording.
  • Communicate insights to research teams that encompass lived experiences within communities to which you are connected and that is compelling, distinctive, and sustainable.
  • Participate in TRIO studios, communicating that vision as contributor to the problem-solving discussions.
  • Participate in ITM meetings, such as Community Advisory Review Committee (CARC), Sociome data commons, Grand Rounds, and events as assigned, communicating that vision and ensuring the representation of community voices as needed and appropriate.
  • Participate in CTSA Consortium meetings, such as the Trial Innovation Network, N3C, and ACTS special interest groups, and events as assigned, communicating that vision and ensuring the representation of community voices as needed and appropriate.
  • Assist with the placement, startup, and implementation of multi-center clinical research at Endeavor Health.
  • Evaluate studies for feasibility within the Endeavor context; assist local PIs with IRB applications and reliance; develop local budgets, study processes, and workflows
  • Assist with early recruitment and study visits before handing off to the PI/study team.
  • Under the direction of the TRIO Manager, assist in ad hoc Network Capacity Cluster projects, including but not limited to data collection, maintaining accurate and complete records, study-related communications, and data management and reporting.
  • Performs other related work as needed

What you will need:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Experience: Experience working as a community advocate or organizer preferred; previous experience working within a healthcare setting preferred; Proven record in working across cultural, socio-economic, hierarchical and disciplinary boundaries and with people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Skills: Excellent communication skills; works well with people; strong cultural competency knowledge; hospitable, flexible, and adaptable in interpersonal interactions; able to organize and lead groups of people in discussions
  • Travel: Candidate must be able to occasionally travel
