Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Specialist BB&E is a full service civil and environmental engineering and consulting firm, headquartered in Northville, Michigan, which services both the Federal and Industrial sectors throughout the United States. BB&E team members provide Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering and Program/Project Management Services to Federal and private sectors.
Position Summary
BB&E is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented EMS Specialist for BB&E's NASA Ames Environmental Research Center Support Services Contract (ESS) providing support for environmental management systems at NASA Ames Research Center (ARC).
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for performing environmental regulatory analyses and reporting on new regulations to ARC.
- Audit compliance of labs, machine shops, and other operational areas indoors and outdoors.
- Perform audits collaboratively with team members and management around ARC.
- Ability to understand mission and operational activities sufficiently to analyze root causes of deficiencies and collaboratively develop effective corrective actions.
- Report noncompliance with Federal, State and Local regulations and requirements, as well as NASA policies and procedures.
- Report to Center team members and management on topics related to the Environmental Management System.
- Assist with evaluating potential environmental risks.
- Coordinate and collaborate with various subject matter experts, Program Managers, and other team members to improve compliance and operating procedures.
- Assist with the development of risk management measures and effective corrective measures.
- Assist team members with various training developments.
- Track and maintain detailed records on progress of corrective measures and risk management plans.
- Prepare presentation materials and present them to team members and managers.
- Responsible for gathering information from multiple sources, performing analyses, and synthesizing the information into clear technical reports.
Key Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship is required
- Ability to successfully pass a federal agency background check is required.
- Knowledge:
- Experience working with regulatory analysis and compliance activities & programs required.
- Relevant experience with Environmental Management Systems and environmental compliance is highly preferred.
- Specific experience in conducting and documenting environmental audit results and multi-program compliance programs required.
- Familiarity with analyzing complex environmental systems, including the ability to apply physical, chemical, & mathematical principles to perform calculations.
- Must have the ability to understand calculations related to chemical inventories, discharge permits, waste management, and compliance with environmental regulations.
- Experience with conducting site inspections and audits across diverse environments, including industrial, aerospace, scientist, and medical settings.
- Expertise in identifying key findings, conducting root-cause analyses, performing risk assessments, and developing corrective action plans.
- Problem-solving skills to identify and address any issues that may arise, minimizing risks and preventing accidents.
- Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Software: MS Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.
- Self-Starter: Highly motivated, organized, and detail-oriented, with the ability to problem solve and function as a member of a team.
Experience & Education
- Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years' related experience is required.
- Certification and Training: First Aid/CPR Certification preferred.
- Education: A Bachelor's degree or higher in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Quantitative Environmental program, or related field is required.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to walk, sit, and/or stand for extended periods for multiple days/weeks
- Able to operate office equipment, including computers, copy machine, phone, etc.
- Capable of light lifting, up to 80 lbs.
- Working conditions:
- Able to work both indoor/outdoor (with exposure to the elements)
- Able to walk/climb/knee/crouch and reach
- Able to work on rough terrain when necessary
- Able to work in confined spaces and/or heights
- Able to wear the required PPE, minimally use gloves, a hard hat, a respirator, and steel-toe boots that may be in combination with protective clothing/suits, a respirator, and/or a fall restraint/recovery harness
- Exposure to hazards/contaminants at times
