Position Description:

As a Manager, Content Strategy and Social Media, you will be responsible for leading a content strategy plan and implementing and optimizing it to align to and ignite pride and awareness of the pillars, priorities and people of MCW. By leading strategies and team, this position will anchor MCW as Wisconsin's health and science leader striving to improve health for all. Through curated content, this position and its team will elevate the unique contributions of MCW researchers to advance health. This person must be a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, knows the complexities of an academic medical system or can get to know them quickly, who can juggle multiple requests from multiple departments at one time, and can navigate complex partnerships.

Targeting specific strategic priorities, the work conducted by this position and his/her team of direct reports contributes to the enhanced reputation, awareness, understanding, appreciation and recognition of and support for the Medical College of Wisconsin and its programs. The work will anchor MCW nationally as a leading research-intensive university and will enhance accessibility of science for the community. This is a vital role for the Medical College of Wisconsin and one that needs ongoing efforts and tenacity to reap success.

The manager in this role is also responsible for developing an overall social media strategy for MCW and tracking what is effective and what is not on these channels to encourage engagement; the role ensures the social media efforts of the Office of Communications are focused appropriately (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other key channels) with maximum engagement potential. This role will lead leveraging social media and external channels including Instagram, Facebook, CCWS, Science Cafe's, etc., to elevate and amplify MCW's research enterprise and its scientists, and [partner with community influencers and partners to engage in and amplify content to increase interest in and understanding of MCW and its impact.

This Content Strategy and Social Media Manager role also will need to work closely and collaboratively with all other managers and directors within the Office of Communications to keep everyone apprised of the upcoming content. Candidates invited for an interview will be required to provide writing samples including news releases, feature articles, etc.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a strategic annual content strategy plan, focused on raising overall reputation and organizational visibility, as well as targeted visibility of key programs
  • Lead the creative process from concept to execution, partnering across the Communications team to ensure collaboration, teamwork and communication at all steps of the process.
  • Develop and implement a social media strategy that encourages engagement with external audiences and with tracking mechanisms to determine effectiveness and maximize potential.
  • Facilitate a process for content development and dissemination.
  • Serve as MCW's content expert, assisting stakeholders with developing creative, strategic content that promotes consistency and clarity of MCW's brand voice. Ensure all content is on-brand in terms of design, style, quality, tone of voice and image.
  • Lead a team of internal and external creative professionals (writers, designers, video producers, photographers and freelancers) in developing multimedia campaigns that tell the MCW story in a way that fulfills strategic goals and appeals to a range of stakeholders.
  • Serve as MCW's social media expert, assisting stakeholders with developing social strategy content, promotes consistency and clarity of MCW's brand voice, and drives growth aligned with the strategic priorities.
  • Leverage channels of communication and relationships with all Medical College departments, centers and regional campuses to obtain current and accurate information and to identify specific story opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the Office of Communications for coordinated integrated communications activities.
  • Monitor, measure and analyze content on a weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis. Track trends, changes, etc.
  • Identify, negotiate and manage vendor relationships with freelancers and agencies as needed.
  • Lead and optimize social media policy
  • Develop appropriate KPI's to ensure the Office of Communications can track social media activity monthly and report back quarterly to senior management.

  • Proven ability to work comfortably with faculty, staff and senior leadership as a trusted colleague and advisor and with sensitive and confidential information
  • Knowledge of business office procedures and proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Experience in academic medicine helpful but not essential
  • Demonstrated knowledge of multiple channels and platforms (social media, apps, content systems, social media management systems, online, mobile, print, video, photography)
  • Strong production knowledge and creative process management skills
  • Interest in and knowledge of trends influencing design, media, marketing and communications

Position Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.

Minimum education: Bachelor's Degree
Minimum experience: 8+ years of professional experience in Journalism, Public Relations or Communications.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred education: Master's Degree; Journalism, Public Relations, Digital Strategy or Communications

Preferred experience: 8+ years and at least 3 years of healthcare or academic public relations and social media experience preferred.
