Job Summary

This is a short-term, benefits-eligible, full-time one-year-only teaching opportunity for academic year 25/26 beginning August 2025. Teaches courses with an emphasis in general biology for the biology major. Provides instruction and develops curricular materials for majors General Biology (Bio181) including online and/or hybrid sections. Reflects recent advances in the discipline. Develops and provides instruction that incorporates current teaching methodologies, technologies and other trends in science education, incorporates instructional technologies that enhance success of underprepared students from diverse backgrounds. Works with student and faculty populations on campus wide projects and to enhance the learning environment for the student body and local community.

If you are hired into a one-year-only (OYO)/one-semester-only (OSO) benefits eligible position, once your assignment ends, you are ineligible for rehire into a part-time non-benefits eligible position (including Adjunct positions) or to continue working in a part-time non-benefits eligible position for a period of six months at the Maricopa Community Colleges.

Essential Functions

Instructs and oversees students in both classroom and lab settings, uses learning-centered strategies to engage students and promote student success; demonstrates innovation in teaching and learning and the scholarship of learning by focusing on student learning, retention, and achievement; incorporates instructional technology and alternative delivery

Develops instructional materials and curriculum; develops written syllabi and course materials; assesses and evaluates knowledge of subject matter taught and monitors students' scholastic records using MCC's electronic grading system; prepares and grades examinations and other learning activities; participates in division and college assessment and program review processes; uses assessment and evaluation results to improve instruction and student learning

Maintains academic support hours to assist, tutor, and advise students to promote learning, citizenship and personal development; provides leadership for the Life Science Department; works with students outside of the classroom on instructional activities and projects; participates in outreach activities to promote student recruitment

Participates in college and district activities including department/division meetings, committees, workshops, and projects; contributes to the academic life and mission of the college; demonstrates intercultural competence in interactions with students, staff, and the community; maintains a team approach in collaborating with faculty, staff, and students

Minimum Qualifications

The Academic Teaching Fields require the following from an accredited college or university:

A Master's degree or higher in biology or a biology related discipline

OR

A Master's degree or higher in a medical or health related discipline (i.e. MD, PA, DVM, DPM, DO, DC, DDS, ND)

OR

Master's degree or higher in biology education, science education or secondary education with 18 semester graduate credits in biology and/or applied biology courses

Acceptable disciplines and coursework include but are not limited to: Agricultural Sciences, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, Biology/Science Education, Biomedical Sciences, Biosciences, Biotechnology, Botany, Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, Conservation-Wildlife/Plant/Animal, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Evolutionary Biology, Embryology,Entomology, Environmental Science, Environmental Biology, Ecology, Genetics, Immunology, Limnology, Mammalogy, Marine Sciences, Marine Biology, Medical Sciences, Microbiology - Soil/Medical/Veterinary, Molecular Biology, Mycology, Neurobiology, Neuroscience, Nutritional Sciences, Ornithology, Pathology, Pathophysiology, Parasitology, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Therapy, Physiology, Plant And Animal Sciences, Public Health - Epidemiology/Infectious Disease/Toxicology, Veterinary Sciences, Virology, Zoology.

Desired Qualifications

A. MS or PhD degree within the biological sciences. Broadly trained biologist with experience in cell and molecular biology or organismal biology, and anatomy and physiology

B. College teaching experience in face-to-face lecture and lab setting teaching students going into healthcare related fields and biology majors

C. Online college teaching experience preferably with expertise independently developing lecture and lab online courses, or with experience teaching from a ready-made online course shell, for students going into healthcare related fields and biology majors

D. Experience conducting research within the biological sciences in a lab or field setting involving undergraduate college students

E. Developed face-to-face and online curriculum, lecture and lab instructional materials using best practices in college education aimed at a diverse and underprepared student population

F. Demonstrated innovation and creativity related to science education

G. Demonstrated commitment to service to the department and college

Special Working Conditions

May be required to teach at multiple sites and may be assigned to day, evening or weekend classes as needed.

Exposure to biology laboratory chemicals, specimens (including preserved specimens)

May be required to lift up to 25 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation

May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
