Division Safety Coordinator

The Engineering Division at Berkeley Lab is seeking a Division Safety Coordinator (DSC) to oversee safety compliance with Local, State, and Federal regulations, including OSHA, DOE, and Cal/OSHA. The DSC will work with the Lead DSC and departmental staff to foster a safety culture, implement policies, provide training, and ensure adherence to safety protocols across engineering operations.

What You Will Do:



  • Monitor and assess compliance with safety standards and regulations (OSHA, DOE, Cal/OSHA) within the Engineering Division.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and work practices to identify hazards and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs, including new employee orientations and ongoing staff training.
  • Provide guidance on safe work practices and emergency procedures.
  • Investigate safety incidents and near-misses, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports and share findings with the Lead DSC and relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining safety policies, procedures, and programs tailored to the Engineering Division's needs.
  • Serve as the primary contact for safety-related inquiries and liaise with other departments and external agencies.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through employee engagement and feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, training, incident reports, and compliance documentation.
  • Support core EHS programs, including Laboratory Safety, and serve as the institutional owner and SME.
  • Assist with hazard identification, evaluation, and control development based on work activities.
  • Provide support during emergencies, ensuring health, safety, and operational continuity.
  • Ensure safe execution of daily operations within established work authorizations and the ES&H Manual.
  • May lead small projects or act as a technical advisor.



What is Required:



  • B.S. with 5 years of experience, M.S. with 1-3 years, Ph.D. with up to 1 year, or equivalent education and experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA, DOE, and Cal/OSHA regulations and standards.
  • Familiarity with EH&S principles, techniques, and practices.
  • Ability to apply knowledge to moderately complex tasks and provide solutions to problems requiring analysis of identifiable factors.
  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate actions.
  • Works under general supervision, with work reviewed for technical soundness and adherence to policies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and risk assessment skills with the ability to implement effective safety solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage and influence diverse teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to high safety standards.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and passionate about promoting workplace safety.



Desired Qualifications:



  • B.S. with 5-7 years of experience, M.S. with 3-5 years, Ph.D. with 1-3 years, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience in developing and managing safety programs in compliance with OSHA, DOE, and Cal/OSHA regulations.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in safety coordination or a related field, ideally within an engineering or laboratory setting.



Salary:

This position is expected to pay a targeted range of $109,000.00 to $132,000.00 annually and has a full salary range of $96,096.00 to $162,144.00 annually. The final salary is dependent upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Notes:



  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position will involve access to hardware, commodities, and technical information subject to export control regulations including, but not limited to, the Export Administration Regulations ("EAR") and/or International Traffic in Arms Regulations ("ITAR"). Accordingly, any hiring decision may depend in part on Berkeley Lab's ability to obtain or rely on federal government authorizations as required, if you are not a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S. ("green card holder"), asylee, refugee, or other qualifying protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
