The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) is seeking a Data Science Research Assistant to support data analysis and research efforts in emergency medicine, artificial intelligence, and digital health. This position is ideal for a master's-level graduate or advanced undergraduate in Data Science, Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, or a related field who is looking for hands-on experience in healthcare data analysis, machine learning, and translational AI research. The successful candidate will work alongside faculty, clinicians, and researchers to analyze clinical data, develop predictive models, and support research projects that aim to improve patient care, operational efficiency, and clinical decision-making in emergency medicine. Qualified candidates must have a bachelor's. Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in Sata Science, Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, Statistics, Public Health, or a related technical discipline. Preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience in data analysis and research support. Examples of such experience include proficiency in Python, R, and SQL for data processing; familiarity with libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, or Tidyverse; knowledge of statistical techniques and applied machine learning; and the ability to develop visualizations to support research and decision-making. Successful candidates must also demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a research-focused environment. Candidates who have experience working with healthcare data (e.g., EHR systems like EPIC), familiarity with interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7), exposure to natural language processing (NLP), or prior experience supporting academic research and clinical decision-making tools is highly preferred.
