The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is seeking a Senior Facilities Integration Engineer to manage the building model (BIM) and assume system-level ownership for mechanical systems supporting the ALS Facility. This role involves leading the consolidation and development of as-built models from Creo Parametric facility equipment models and architectural BIMs from ALS-U project subcontractors. The engineer will refine models using 3D laser scans and other data to prevent system clashes and may involve editing models, converting 2D to 3D, or working with subcontractors for scan-to-BIM services. The ideal candidate will have strong engineering judgment, systems engineering experience, and leadership skills to coordinate efforts across stakeholders and develop an integrated facility model. A key challenge is resolving space limitations for the new accelerator and avoiding interferences between equipment, building structure, and utilities. This role will support ALS accelerator system design, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical systems, and experimental equipment. The engineer will be supported by a BIM Drafter but must have strong CAD/BIM modeling skills to guide the effort. What You Will Do:
- Oversee integrity and quality of the ALS Building's 3D CAD model, including architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems.
- Consolidate and convert as-built models into a unified BIM system.
- Manage interface between accelerator CAD design (PTC Creo) and BIM Model (Autodesk Revit), defining version control and change management processes.
- Refine models using 3D laser scans and measurement data to prevent system clashes; may lead BIM Modelers or subcontract scan-to-BIM services.
- Develop approval processes for integrated system models, verifying field conditions and resolving system clashes.
- Propose and implement solutions for detected system clashes.
- Establish a single source of truth for building systems to support long-term facility operations.
- Coordinate with internal/external teams to ensure standardized data sets across design efforts.
- Track and resolve facility integration issues in JIRA, managing space conflicts between systems.
- Work with systems engineers to validate cooling system flow budgets, space claims, and mechanical interfaces.
- Integrate electrical and mechanical system testing plans to support overall installation.
- Develop project scope, time/cost estimates, and installation timelines.
- Write specifications for complex procurements, including BIM development subcontracts.
- Analyze technical data, designs, specifications, and supplier capabilities to make manufacturing recommendations.
What is Required:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field with 5+ years of relevant experience or equivalent work.
- Experience with parametric CAD, preferably Creo Parametric and/or Autodesk Revit.
- Familiar with PDM systems and reading/interpreting assembly and detail drawings.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; able to manage multiple projects and priorities.
- Independent judgment in selecting methods for mechanical/manufacturing solutions.
- Knowledge of mechanical/manufacturing considerations for project procurements.
- Experience with manufacturing and assembly practices for equipment like particle accelerators, optics, cryogenic, vacuum, and magnetic systems.
- Ability to manage projects, integrating engineering and scientific components.
- Familiarity with dimensional metrology, GD&T, and Product Data Management software.
- Experience with 3D CAD modeling and structural analysis (hand calculations or FEA software like ANSYS).
- Relevant experience in inventory management in production environments.
Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Engineering, Physics or related field.
- Proven experience designing and building hardware for scientific experiments and managing small engineering teams.
- Skilled in presenting designs through reviews and documentation.
- Proven project management experience.
- Strong engineering skills with CAD and analysis tools expertise.
- Effective collaboration with engineering, scientific staff, external collaborators, and senior management.
- Knowledge of detectors, telescopes, particle accelerators, or similar scientific equipment.
- Experience with Project Life Cycle Management Systems.
Salary: This position is expected to pay a targeted range of $130,000.00 to $158,000.00 annually and has a full salary range of $115,176.00 to $194,340.00 annually. The final salary is dependent upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience. Notes:
