General: 1. Plans, assigns and coordinates daily job assignments; works with direct supervisor in setting daily and weekly job assignments. 2. Prepares worksite area; marks streets for hotlines before start of job; sets road detours and lane closures as needed, etc. 3. Schedules mechanical repairs and maintenance work on all types of equipment and assures that it is completed. 4. Monitor and checks the work of the crew/s, providing guidance, training, and support to improve efficiency and quality of work. 5. Operates all types of equipment used in street construction, maintenance and snow removal, including loaders, skidsteers, backhoes, leaf machines, snowplows, etc. and tools such as rotary and pipe lasers, concrete saws. 6. Keeps track of daily jobs and when they are completed; works with other departments as jobs and locations change. 7. Prepares required records and reports of work performed. 8. Assists in street cleaning and maintenance, snow removal operations, leaves and brush removal, etc. 9. Determines the staffing, tools and supplies needed to perform the daily jobs/tasks.
Assigned Duties Related to the Repair Shop:
1. Acts as a first line of contact for employees, customers, vendors and secondary for parts acquisition. 2. Schedules, assigns, and reviews Mechanics' work activities. Coordinates shift work activities with other City departments and various vendors and dealers. 3. Completes initial vehicle and equipment receipt and inspection; interacts with manufacturers and vendors regarding warranty programs and repairs as needed; prepares vehicle and equipment for disposal, online auction, conventional auction or salvage. 4. Analyzes and reviews work orders on a computer-generated program for purpose of repair and preventive maintenance requirements. Determines work priorities and monitors costs and billable items. 5. Oversee and/or perform a full range of mechanical maintenance and repair tasks of all city fleet and equipment. Ensures repairs and maintenance complies with local, State, or national standards. 6. Performs quality control inspections of shop work to ensure work meets standards and is performed completely with accurate documentation. 7. Works with a team of mechanics, diagnosing and resolving complex mechanical issues, and providing guidance and training. 8. Provides information to department supervisors and to vehicle operators concerning the repair, usage and proper operation and care of vehicles and equipment. 9. Creates daily reports of all shop activity and repairs. Verify proper repairs were performed by technicians and documented properly. 10. Performs arc and gas welding or cutting for maintenance, repair and construction of City equipment. 11. Operates all equipment and electronic test equipment such as multi-meters, computers, and self-test equipment.

Requirements of Work: Graduation from high school and at least 1 year of specialized technical school training or Associates Degree in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Mechanics, plus 4 - 6 years of related experience and / or certification as a journeyman mechanic; experience in public works construction including landscaping, street maintenance, sanitary and storm sewer maintenance and electrical work and including some supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills: Knowledge of *The materials, methods, practices, techniques and equipment used in public works construction and maintenance projects. *The operation, routine servicing and maintenance of standard and specialized automotive construction equipment. *Traffic signs and lights and the ability to safely install and maintain electronic traffic signals. *The use of standard office equipment including computers and relevant software. *Occupational hazards and the methods and techniques used to avoid or minimize risks. *The operating principles of internal combustion engines, drive trains, electrical systems, multi-plexed electrical systems, CAN (controller area network) electronic systems, chassis components of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment. *The current industry standards, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of motor operated vehicles. *Of occupational hazards and safety practices in the maintenance, repair, and operation of motorized vehicles and equipment. *Of the tools, materials, and equipment used in fabrication, welding, and maintenance. Ability to *Understand and carry out instructions. *Read and interpret blueprints and specifications. *Plan, assign and coordinate the work of others. *Prepare and keep records and reports. *Perform light to heavy physical tasks under varying weather conditions. *Work in confined spaces. *Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the general public. *Estimate and order the proper amount of materials for projects. *Ability to read and interpret drawings, plans, schematics, and specifications of electrical installations *To climb ladders, poles and towers, and work at great heights above ground and the physical stamina to perform sustained manual work for extended periods of time. *Respond to emergency situations to provide mechanical support for other City operations responding to emergencies. *Learn and utilize division, department, and City electronic devices and computerized systems to effectively perform duties and responsibilities. *Analyze situations, make appropriate decisions, and take appropriate action in a timely and effective manner. *Diagnose mechanical failures and defects in wide variety of vehicles and equipment. *Use all tools and equipment necessary to accomplish automotive maintenance and repair including, OEM software (Cat, Cummins, Allison, Detroit, and ford/GM.) Skill in *Organization and time management. *Oral and written communications. *Snow removal operations and other seasonal operations. *City-wide leaf collection program. *Identifying and preventing work hazards. *The use of all types of construction and maintenance vehicles, tools and equipment. *Skill in reading and interpreting hydraulic schematics, electrical wiring diagrams, service manuals and other reference materials. Skill in diagnosing defective equipment, performing complete engine, transmission and related vehicle component overhauls. *Journeyman level skills in welding, gas and diesel engine repair. *The operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the performance of the essential job functions.
Necessary Special Requirements: Valid Wisconsin driver's license; CDL with A, B, and C endorsements and N preferred but not required; must have the ability to successfully complete a pre-employment post-offer physical including drug screen upon hire, and the ability to remain drug and alcohol free within legal guidelines (random drug and alcohol screens will be made throughout employment); CPR and First Aid certification and the specific training or certifications must be completed within 6 months of hire. Shop: ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in all phases of heavy truck and off-road equipment repairs preferred.
