Overview

The Manager of Digital Hardware Engineering, is key member of QSC's Product Development leadership team. They lead and manage a dedicated HW Engineering team, responsible for design and execution of all digital hardware PCBA's within QSC Professional Audio's roadmap. In addition, the Manager of Digital Hardware Engineering will also contribute as hands-on Senior engineer, contributing to high profile, select projects.

This position requires someone who possesses strong technical skills in addition to excellent leadership skills. As a functional lead, the Manager of Digital Hardware Engineering is responsible for ensuring that all project work is scheduled and completed on time, within budget, and to QSC's demanding quality standards. Tasks include managing staff at all seniority levels, facilitating cross-functional teams to achieve the best designs possible, balancing competing needs and priorities, and working collaboratively with other department leaders. Additionally, as a function lead the successful candidate is accountable for driving innovation and best practices, participating in design reviews, setting and maintaining design standards, introducing and incorporating the latest design methods and tools, improving internal and external design practices, and keeping our technology at the forefront of the industry.

The Manager of Digital Hardware Engineering is also part of a tightknit, focused and highly collaborative platform team that includes technical leads from Power Hardware Engineering & Software Engineering. This platform team moves quickly, and requires someone who can offer different points of view, make good decisions, balance the many demands of the role, and deliver the highest-value products - on schedule and within budget.

This is an ideal position for a Senior Electrical Engineer, with strong managerial skills and a passion for developing high-quality audio products.

The position is based in Costa Mesa, CA.

Base Salary Range 136,000 - 160,000

The above reflects the pay range that QSC reasonably expects to pay for this role. This pay range also depends on various factors such as job duties and requirements, relevant experience and skills and geographic location. In addition to the base salary range, QSC offers a comprehensive package including but not limited to health benefits, 401K or Roth retirement plans and generous time off.

Responsibilities

Individual Contributor - 60%

    As a Senior HW Engineer, partners with other Engineering functional leaders in the Mechanical, Acoustic, and Software departments, to create innovative new products for multiple markets through collaboration and best practices.
  • Designs block diagrams in close collaboration with the Embedded Software team, then execute with schematic design and PCBA layouts, including cross-functional design reviews at each stage (Test, Compliance etc).
  • Integrates innovative technical solutions to best satisfy market constraints and requirements including feature-sets, performance, cost, manufacturability, quality, and time to market.

Manufacturing Support - 15%

  • Review of PCB Pannelization design
  • Oversee all PCBA's released for rapid prototyping and ultimately for production.
  • Work with Embedded Software team and HW Technicians to bring-up and debug new PCBA's
  • Collect and analyze failure data, then recommend updates to improve product reliability.
  • Mitigate line-down issues arising from the manufacturing process and procurement needs.
  • Provide engineering support for the manufacturing implications of the Supply Change Request process, including engineering support for EOL / LTB for components & materials

Team Leadership & Development - 15%

  • Coaches and mentors a small team of direct-report Engineers, through regular design reviews, scheduled 1:1 sessions and annual performance reviews.
  • Provides direction and technical recommendations to the team to ensure the progress of complex initiatives and deliverables are met.
  • Quickly addresses any obstacles or setbacks raised by team members, to maintain forward progress.
  • Define and communicate performance expectations; monitor, evaluate and optimize performance; coach and motivate the team to achieve success.

Functional Management - 10%

  • Schedules work and activities for all direct-reports. Collaborates with Program Management and Technical project Lead to plan top-down design schedules that will meet Hardware Engineering resource demands, including any Sustaining Engineering efforts.
  • Works closely with Component Engineering to source parts and with Altium librarian to drive through new part requests
  • Develops, maintains, and champions tool-chains and internal processes for product development (ECAD, Simulation, Test, Qualification, etc.)


Qualifications

Education:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering or Similar.

Experience:

  • 10+ Years of experience designing, supporting through the product life cycle and testing Digital Audio products and relatied subsystems for consumer or professional markets.
  • 3+ years managing electrical engineering teams of two persons or more
  • Experience with audio analog design such as gain staging, preamps, gain tapers, etc (highly desirable)
  • Proficiency with Altium ECAD software (preferred)
  • Experience working with offshore contract manufacturers
