Purpose

The Center for Energy & Environmental Resources (CEER) at the JJ Pickle Research Campus is seeking a knowledgeable and security-focused System Administrator to manage and support CEERs IT infrastructure, systems, and compliance posture. This position plays a critical role in supporting day-to-day technical operations while ensuring alignment with federal cybersecurity standards, including Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), NIST 800-171. The ideal candidate will bring a mix of hands-on systems administration experience, High Value asset management, scripting/automation skills, and a keen understanding of compliance and common audit requirements. This role serves as both a technical point-of-contact and a compliance enforcer within CEERs IT environment.

Responsibilities
  • Systems Administration & Maintenance. Manage and maintain CEER's servers, desktops, and network infrastructure across Windows, macOS, and Linux environments. Perform system patching, SSL certificate renewals, OS-level updates, and backup verification routines. Administer virtualized environments and storage systems in support of CEERs research and business operations. Oversee configuration, security, and maintenance of departmental servers, ensuring performance and uptime.

  • Implement and enforce cybersecurity best practices. Security, Compliance & Policy Enforcement Conduct permissions audits, log reviews, and GPO validation to enforce access control policies. Maintain documentation and system baselines to support audit readiness and compliance reporting. Apply system hardening standards (e.g., CIS Benchmarks, DISA STIGs) to all managed devices and environments.

  • Automation & Workflow Optimization. Develop and maintain automation tools and scripts (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash) to streamline IT processes. Use native OS tools (e.g., Automator/Shortcuts on macOS) to enhance admin workflows and task efficiency. Generate automated reports from CSVs/logs for compliance tracking, permission reviews, and GPO summaries.

  • User & Project Support. Provide end-user support for faculty, staff, and students (~65 personnel), including system provisioning, troubleshooting, and remote assistance. Image, configure, and maintain laptops and desktops, support application installations and license management. Assist with website content updates and small-scale web maintenance. Coordinate with UT central IT and vendors on escalated technical issues.

  • Backup, Disaster Recovery & Documentation. Design and maintain backup routines and disaster recovery procedures for critical data and systems. Document system configurations, network diagrams, compliance records, and admin procedures. Support the planning, installation, and deployment of new technologies and IT infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

Experience with Active Directory, Group Policy, and endpoint management platforms (e.g., JAMF, Intune). Familiarity with cybersecurity compliance frameworks. Working knowledge of Windows Server, Linux, macOS, and hybrid enterprise environments. Scripting experience with PowerShell, Bash, or Python. Ability to interpret policy and translate it into technical controls. Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills in both hardware and software environments. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field. Certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, or RHCE. Experience with cloud platforms. Familiarity with security tools and protocols (VPNs, firewalls, antivirus, MFA). At least 5 years of experience supporting and securing desktop and server environments.

Hourly Rate

$28.75
