Job Summary

The Fire Safety Specialist position is a mid-level career position in the fire prevention field. The focus of this position is to carry out and maintain the fire drill and fire safety training programs for UCSF Health and campus buildings working collaboratively with existing Fire Safety Specialist personnel.

UCSF is comprised of three main campuses in San Francisco (Mt. Zion, Mission Bay, and Parnassus) with UCSF Health having clinics/locations in multiple outlying areas (including Monterey, Modesto, and Santa Rosa). This position supports all of these locations to varying degrees, and the candidate must have a clean driving record with a valid California driver's license.

Fire drills at the three hospitals are held quarterly on each shift (day, swing, and midnight) and at varying times and days; the candidate must have flexibility in their schedule to conduct these required drills. Strong organizational as well as verbal and written communication skills are required for scheduling, conducting, and documenting drills and training as well as program maintenance and improvement.

The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to present training to groups (generally 10-25) of employees. Through coordination with key departments, this position provides a variety of fire safety training such as Floor Warden, High Rise Evacuation, Housing Fire Safety, etc.

The ideal candidate has at least one year of experience in the safety field with a general understanding and knowledge of fire prevention. Experience in the healthcare setting is desirable, but not required.

The position will have the opportunity to support annual building inspections with the EH&S Title 19 building inspection team. These inspections will be opportunities to learn collaboratively about fire life safety in the field with experienced fire inspectors. Continuing education is encouraged and opportunities for fire prevention training are supported.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $73,100 - $115,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) provides safety and compliance guidance to all UCSF operations and facilities, including activities across both the Campus and the Health System. Under formal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with both the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), EH&S Fire Prevention staff perform plan review, construction inspections, existing building inspections and other work on behalf of OSFM and OSHPD, providing reviews and code enforcement on behalf of the agencies. Other EH&S staff provide expert consultation and other services related to bio-safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, workplace safety and ergonomics, industrial hygiene, environmental protection and spill response.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in the safety field with general understanding and knowledge of fire prevention
  • Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment
  • Working skills in the appropriate use of technology and relevant scientific equipment as required
  • Knowledge of California Fire Code, California Code of Regulations Title 19, Public Safety, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, The Joint Commission or Center for Medicare Medicaid Pref.
  • Valid CA Driver's license. Incumbent is subject to DMV pull notice program

Preferred Qualifications


  • Solid, comprehensive working knowledge / understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields
  • Knowledge of California Fire Code, California Code of Regulations Title 19, Public Safety, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, The Joint Commission or Center for Medicare Medicaid
  • Experience in the healthcare setting

License/Certification


  • Valid CA Driver's license. Incumbent is subject to DMV pull notice program
