Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Manager in our Long-term Disability Claims Department!

About the role

In this role, you will manage and supervise an LTD claims team. You will advise and empower the team to get results in line with department goals which focus on quality and risk management.

You will develop strategies to improve departmental structure and procedures based on team performance, market requirements, and growth initiatives. In addition, you will provide guidance and mentorship regarding general claim policy, as well as specific claims problems and interpretation of policy and terminology. While a component of this role will be to ensure production metrics are met, most of the responsibilities involve developing and empowering team members and maintaining effective risk management.

What you will do



  • Analyze reporting for trends and find opportunities for improvement on team and individual levels
  • Develop plans to achieve those opportunities through coaching and feedback to employees and team level process changes
  • Implement and evaluate changes
  • Build an effective team where aggregate results meet department expectations
  • Understand data integrity and ensures accuracy of data in claim system
  • Create new reporting as needed to capture results
  • Conduct sample claim audits and segment reviews to ensure work quality timely claim outcomes
  • Direct work assignments and review work in progress
  • Constantly monitor workflows and production to ensure timeliness and accuracy
  • Review and sign off on claim decisions as decided by department, to include all adverse claim decisions, to make sound decisions with minimal litigation risk
  • Work closely with team leads and case managers to understand opportunities that may not be identifiable through reporting
  • Ensure adherence to legal and operational compliance
  • Continuously build subject matter expertise
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge of policies and procedures
  • Liaise with legal department on complex issues
  • Work directly with vendors and resources to ensure quality on items such as forensic accounting reviews, production analyses, peer reviews, independent exams, background investigations, and surveillance reports
  • Coach team to make appropriate decisions on when to use these resources, considering risk and expense
  • Apply expertise to balance risk management and customer service
  • Demonstrate the ability to represent the department and company in external meetings; attend finalist presentations as needed.
  • Provide support to sales and implementation through broker/customer support inquiries
  • Educate field personnel on claim process and philosophy when appropriate
  • Resolve customer concerns and negotiate disputes to provide service to customers without sacrificing risk management
  • Oversee staff, with responsibility for hiring, performance management, and coordinating training and development
  • Develop staff members in accordance with company and personal goals
  • Provide accountability for department expectations
  • Challenge and inspire employees to achieve business results and motivate them through leadership and by celebrating successes
  • Effectively communicate with staff, peers, and management
  • Foster a professional culture, acting as a leader and encouraging collaboration and change management
  • Promote advances and changes in industry standards to the case managers
  • Lead and participate in special projects as needed
  • Partner with other teams in the benefits department to identify areas of opportunity and deliver on those opportunities

Compensation

Salary Range: $85,400 - $142,300 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who You Are



  • High School Diploma required. College degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience preferred.
  • 6-10 years' experience in LTD or IDI claims required
  • Detailed knowledge of ERISA, state guidelines, claim practices and general accounting
  • Expert in conflict resolution
  • 2+ years of management experience preferred
  • Able to communicate effectively internally and externally, across multiple levels of leadership
  • General understanding of the organization and team impact on the business
  • Proven track record of managing projects, leading, and navigating change
  • Proficient with Microsoft office, specifically Excel and PowerPoint
  • Some minimal travel required.


Travel:

Required Training & Professional Development
All newly hired people leaders with direct reports are required to complete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra's corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Symetra covers all travel and accommodation expenses.
