Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Security and Emergency Service Division has an opening for a Site Access Specialist to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will play a crucial role in ensuring secure and efficient site access for employees, affiliates, and visitors. This position provides comprehensive administrative and technical support to the Site Access Office (SAO), focusing on badge issuance, parking management, and Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) support while maintaining a strong commitment to customer service.

As a key point of contact, you will utilize your organizational and communication skills to manage daily operations, respond to inquiries, and resolve issues promptly. You will exercise independent judgment within established guidelines to handle diverse tasks and contribute to the smooth functioning of the SAO.

The Badge Office is open 8:00am - 3:30 pm daily. The incumbent must adhere to the established Badge Office working hours by being ready to open at 7:30 am daily and remaining on duty until the closing time of 4:00 pm. Additionally, the schedule includes a requirement to work every other Wednesday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

What You Will Do:



  • Issue LSSO badges to new employees, affiliates, and contractors; provide safety/security briefings prior to issuance.
  • Support badge access inquiries, adjudicate requests, and resolve badge malfunctions in coordination with technical staff.
  • Liaise with internal departments to ensure efficient interdepartmental collaboration and process improvements.
  • Maintain inventory, submit supply requests, and ensure equipment is clean, accounted for, and serviceable.
  • Deliver SES security briefings during HR orientations; streamline intern and group onboarding processes.
  • Manage temporary and construction worker badges; oversee issuance, tracking, and accountability.
    Process parking permissions and resolve related inquiries; coordinate exceptions and permit returns with project teams.
  • Assist with HSPD-12 badging procedures, including identity verification, biometric data collection, and applicant support.
  • Serve as USAccess activator, enroller, or sponsor as needed; manage appointments and enrollment logistics.
  • Maintain professionalism, protect sensitive information, and adhere to security protocols and data regulations.
  • Stay current with policies, adapt to evolving security requirements, and participate in training.
  • Support SES Division events, EOC activations, drills, and assessments; fulfill other duties as assigned.



What is Required:



  • 2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Demonstrated ability to comprehend a variety of complex customer/operational/administrative requirements or problems and exercise good judgment to implement effective alternatives and solutions.
  • Basic knowledge of security and access control standards and best practices.
  • Advanced level computer skills and full knowledge of common business software including Microsoft Office software suite, email, and calendaring software.
  • Demonstrated effective organizational skills sufficient to independently establish priorities and ensure completion of projects in a timely manner.
  • Advanced level word processing skills to produce error-free documents that include proper formatting and correct grammar usage and punctuation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with a broad range of individuals to include Laboratory employees, visitors, guests, and dignitaries.
  • Demonstrated experience working as part of a team with the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and willingness to work in a changing work environment.
  • Display dynamic interpersonal skills to serve the lab populace and work cohesively with team members and colleagues
  • Experience exercising significant independent authority and accountability for the successful operation of a unit or program.
  • Punctuality in opening, staffing and/or closing the Site Access Office which operates at specific times, Monday through Friday excluding holidays.
  • Must be able to sit and perform computer and telephone-related functions for up to 6.5 hours per day, operate a camera; operate a badging machine; and operate a computer, printer, and copy machine.
  • May work extended hours outdoors during events.
  • The work is primarily sedentary and is usually accomplished while the employee is comfortably seated at a desk or table. Some walking/standing may occur in the course of a normal workday in connection with travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the work site. Items carried typically are light objects such as notebooks, and data processing reports. Occasional physical activity such as standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling and similar activities are required in the conduct of security performance tests and verification exercise at field facilities.
  • In the performance of field inspections and evaluations the incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields. Interactions with disgruntled or disturbed employees could result in physical injury.



Desired Qualifications:



  • Undergraduate degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
  • Understanding of Laboratory operations required to analyze and solve moderately complex and diverse problems that cross-cut several major functional areas is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of UC and LBNL policies and procedures and DOE S&S Protection Program directives
  • Ability to work extended hours or days as needed.
  • Experience developing and improving processes and procedures flowed down from policy.



Notes:



  • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The Site Access Specialist Level 2 position is expected to pay $95K - $106K annually, which fits into the full salary range of $82,440 - $142,452, for the job classification of SE5.2
