Position Summary
The Sr. Director of Student Academic Services plays a central, strategic leadership role in the college, leading the Office of Student Academic Services and a number of critical student success initiatives that advance Franklin's undergraduate instructional mission across 40+ departments, institutes, and schools. The role oversees a comprehensive portfolio of professional student-centered undergraduate advising and success efforts, from first-time enrollment and orientation to retention, persistence, and degree attainment. This includes serving a significant number of undeclared, transfer, and "Double Dawg" undergraduate to master's degree students. The position is central to realizing the college's ambitious Academic Innovation goals across a complex institutional ecosystem, which includes Franklin's many core contributions to the general education curriculum. The Sr. Director collaborates effectively, strategically, and thoughtfully within and across units in Franklin and with central administration (e.g., Office of Instruction, Enrollment Management, Registrar, Pre-Professional Advising, Student Affairs, IT, etc). This central leadership role requires a strong understanding of student success factors in the current higher education landscape, exceptional communication skills, facility with data analysis and emerging technology (including AI tools, as relevant), independent judgement, management and operational capabilities, and discretion.
The Director reports directly to the Dean, is a member of the Dean's leadership team, and serves as a key advisor to the Dean in all matters related to student success. The position also frequently engages with the College's Office of Academic Innovation, led by the Sr. Associate Dean to ensure alignment with strategic academic initiatives, and with the Executive Directors of IT and Marketing & Communications. The Director will represent the College in various capacities, including as a member of the campus-wide Academic Advising Coordinating Council ( AACC), the College Curriculum Committee, and the Registrar's DegreeWorks, Banner and related subcommittees that support the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences' student academic services team. The successful candidate will infuse current research and best practices, strategic thinking and project management skills, entrepreneurial and responsive agency, data-informed decision making, and operational efficiency to advance the integration, facilitation, coordination, and fostering of outcomes-driven efforts to optimize student success.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Plan and implement short- and long-range unit goals to advance effective academic advising practices; provide inclusive, collaborative leadership for staff; and ensure appropriate professional development. Collaborate proactively, consistently, and effectively within the college and across a range of university units to integrate a holistic approach to student success, securing input and feedback to develop and implement innovative programs and initiatives that enhance retention, persistence, and graduation while staying abreast of educational trends and best practices, infusing forward-thinking strategies and new technologies into student academic services. The Director will regularly interact with department heads, directors, and undergraduate coordinators to secure appropriate student progress, address any emerging issues, and advise on optimizing curriculum implementation.
  • Unit Management: Oversee the daily operations and functions of the Office of Student Academic Services, including optimized operational efficiency and sound business management in budgets, schedules, and use of relevant technology. Manage the hiring, onboarding, training, workload determination, delegation of responsibilities, coaching, mentoring, and performance evaluations of staff.
  • Data Management and Analysis: Gather, analyze, and distribute data to identify trends and student needs, assisting departments with enrollment projections, curriculum implementation and scheduling, and data analysis related to their courses and majors. Run reports on advising services, recommend necessary changes, and proactively assess the effectiveness of student success services. Implement continuous improvement strategies

  • Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate information and make verbal or written presentations based on this information, including skills with data analysis and management that leverages relevant technologies and emerging tools, such as AI.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and implement policy, review and act upon the most difficult individual and organizational problems, and administer programs.
  • Ability to analyze problem situations, identify feasible solutions, and present recommendations in a forward-looking, concise, logical, and systematic manner, anticipating issues and the consequences of the decisions and actions.
  • Ability to work with confidential and sensitive information and records and commit to the highest ethical standards.
  • Skill and technical proficiency in electronic document management systems and student management systems (e.g., Banner, Athena, SAGE, DegreeWorks, etc).

Leadership and Operations

  • Oversees the Office of Student Academic Services, including the college's Office of Academic Advising, Upper-Division Departmental Advising, Office of Transfer Academic Services, Graduation Certification Office, Connect & Complete Retention Team, and Academic Standards Committee.
  • Provides leadership in all academic/curriculum matters that impact Franklin College undergraduates, including collaboration with the Registrar's Office, Admissions Office, Office of Instruction, and curriculum decision-making units, as well as other advising units across campus.
  • Consults with and supports departments on curriculum development and reviews all curriculum change proposals submitted to the college, in collaboration with the Sr. Associate Dean.
  • Administers the budget, establishes goals, and assesses the services of the unit.
  • Supervision of eight direct reports, representing a staff of approximately 55 employees.
  • Communicates and reinforces summer leave policies and ensures adequate staff and physical resources to provide academic advising for incoming first-year and transfer students during summer and winter orientation sessions.
  • Engage in continuous improvement and data analysis to support the Office of Student Academic Services as well as the departments within the college.
  • Collect, interpret, and share data to pinpoint trends and student requirements. Implement data-driven strategies, including AI tools as relevant, to enhance student academic services.

  • Represents Franklin College on multiple campus-wide committees and manages functions related to the Franklin College Dean's office, including:
  • Processing and monitoring of academic suspension and dismissal,
  • Overseeing the college appeals process,
  • Providing college recommendations on student appeals to the Educational Affairs Committee (EAC), and
  • Administering the foreign language waiver and substitution policy.
