Summary:
Under general supervision but according to established procedures responds to requests in writing and by telephone for transport of patients specimens and various documents within the Hospital complex. Assigns central transport and mail room aides to complete request according to established priorities and experience-based judgement. Performs duties of both aides as needed.

Responsibilities:
Receives requests primarily by telephone for transportation and delivery services from and to all areas of the Hospital. Maintains time log of calls received and ensures tape recorder is properly recording all incoming calls. Uses judgement and experience-based knowledge of Hospital complex and Central Transport operations to efficiently coordinate responses to requests.

Assigns requests to aides and longs time of completion as called in by aides.

Prepares assignment board each day based on written schedule of patients booked in advance for transportation.

Prepares staffing chart based on weekly rotating schedule of aides assigned to specific stations units or poll as directed by supervisor.

Advises Central transport supervisor of delays in responding to requests and recommends necessary corrective action.

Performs minor maintenance repairs on or replaces addressograph machines used on patient units.

Performs duties of central transport and mail room aides as needed to cover for absences and to respond to *stat* requests.

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Level of knowledge normally attained through completion of high school.

Interpersonal skills needed to respond courteously to requests and complaints and to effectively assign work.

Knowledge of Central Transport operations needed to set priorities not covered by established guidelines.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

One to three months on-the-job training in addition to training as central transport and mail room aides.

WORKING CONDITION AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Normal office environment with limited exposure to communicable diseases when performing as a central transport aide.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.
