About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a regular (with benefits), full-time, Project-level Technical Editor to join the Technical Publications team and support SWCA primarily in the West. The preferred location for the candidate is in Pasadena, CA, but highly qualified, remote (distributed) candidates who can generally adhere to Pacific working hours will be seriously considered.

SWCA's technical reports range from simple memoranda to multichapter, multivolume environmental impact statements.

The candidate will be responsible for editing and formatting our scientific technical reports and marketing proposals.

This full-time position has occasional evening, weekend, and overtime work when deadlines demand.

The candidate could fill any of three project-level roles based on skill and years of relevant experience:

  • Assistant Project Technical Editor: Typically up to 3 years of relevant experience and expertise.
  • Associate Project Technical Editor: Typically up to 5 years of relevant experience and expertise.
  • Project Technical Editor: Typically up to 7 years of relevant experience and expertise.

What you will accomplish

  • Edit and format large and small reports (usually containing text, tables, maps and other graphics, and appendices) for correctness, completeness, organization, clarity, consistency, grammar, and conformity with SWCA or client style guidelines.
  • Work quickly under tight deadlines while maintaining an appropriate level of quality.
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively with project managers and authors to resolve content questions, changes in the schedule, and budget constraints.
  • Collaborate with other editors to track updates to style sheets, ensure consistency of voice and content, and meet deadlines.

Experience and qualifications for success

Required

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • At least three (3) years of relevant technical editing experience
  • Science background and/or technical knowledge of environmental consulting, biological sciences, or cultural resources is highly desirable.
  • Command of Microsoft Word, especially Track Changes and Styles functions. Experience with other MS programs and collaborative editing platforms a plus.
  • Ability to translate technical jargon into plain language.

Preferred

  • At Least five (5) to seven (7) years of relevant technical editing experience
  • Experience with CEQA and NEPA compliance documents preferred.

An employee in this Pasadena, CA-based project level position can expect a salary rate of: Assistant Project Technical Editor - $28.67/hour - $36.27/hour; Associate Project Technical Editor - $65,707/year to $83,959/year; Project Technical Editor - $74,225/year to $94,910/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
