The Position 2025 Fall Intern - Machine learning for Generative AI

Department Summary

gRED Computational Sciences (gCS) is on a mission to partner across the organization to realize the potential of data, technology and computational approaches that will revolutionize how targets and therapeutics are discovered and developed, ultimately enabling novel treatments for patients across the world.

Computational Biology and Translation (CBT) is a department within gCS that focuses on developing and applying machine learning and computational methods to impact biological discovery, with the ultimate goal of impacting drug discovery and human health. We work collaboratively across disciplines both within and outside gCS.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, California, on site.

The Opportunity

We seek a highly motivated intern to join our group in CBT. The successful candidate will have a strong background in machine learning, a passion for quality and scalability, and an interest in creating evaluation systems. You will contribute to developing, deploying and evaluating LLM based agents across different modalities for complex decision-making pipelines. Your work will be at the intersection of deep learning and large-scale optimization, with a focus on evaluation, benchmarking, scaling and model deployment.

Join us for a 12-week internship (full-time, 40 hours per week) in 2025 at our South San Francisco location (on-site). We offer an exciting opportunity to work on impactful projects in a multidisciplinary environment alongside machine learning scientists, computational biologists, and MLOps engineers, and make a substantial contribution to the field.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, design, and implement novel cutting-edge evaluations for agentic systems with applications to drug discovery.

  • Drive research on (large-scale) generative AI methods solving computational biology challenges.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate LLM based agents and deploy it into impactful applications for drug discovery and target discovery.

  • Opportunity to contribute to publications, presenting results at internal and external scientific conferences.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks or 6 months, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in September.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
