Summary of Job Duties:The Instructor contributes to the Biostatistics Department's efforts to meet the graduate educational needs of UAMS students and enhance the quality of research conducted at UAMS by providing expert statistical guidance to UAMS investigators. Under the guidance of the Biostatistics Faculty or advanced research staff, the Instructor commonly assists investigators with protocol and grant development; data preparation; data analysis and statistical programming using specialized software such as SAS, R, or SPSS; and preparation of reports, manuscripts, presentation materials, and grant application materials. The Instructor will also teach courses for the Biostatistics Department.

Research areas may include community-engaged, public health, population health sciences, basic, and clinical research. The Instructor will also maintain a close relationship with database managers, research administrators, and informaticists involved with specific studies. Qualifications:
  • Doctoral (Ph.D.) degree required.

  • Expertise in a statistical programming language, preferably SAS and/or R.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in conducting inferential statistical analysis.

  • Experience collaborating with a research team on research projects, grant proposals, and manuscripts.

  • Experience in writing statistical methods and results sections in reports, manuscripts, or grant applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs data analyses of research data with an increasing level of independence as warranted by experience and requirements of the project.

  • Applies appropriate statistical methods and skilled programming skills as needed.

  • Access relevant literature to understand the context of the research question.

  • Provides written reports to investigators explaining the statistical methodology and presenting and interpreting the results.Expertise in a statistical programming language is required, along with a working understanding of databases.

  • Teach courses for the Biostatistics Department. The topic and time will be chosen at the direction of the Biostatistics department chair and the vice chair for education. Educational activities may also involve assisting with courses given through the Graduate School and the College of Public Health by means of occasional lectures, preparation and/or grading of assignments and exams, and holding office hours or help sessions.

  • Provides one-time lectures to UAMS faculty and staff and/or participates in research journal clubs and other department activities.

  • Assist investigators in writing manuscripts of completed research and in preparing presentation/poster materials for research conferences.

  • Writes sections of the manuscript that clearly and accurately describe the statistical methods used to analyze the data, providing publication-quality tables and graphics, and assisting in writing/editing the results section of a manuscript.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
