The Opportunity

The Senior Surety Underwriter will be responsible for the producing, underwriting, and business development of assigned geographic territory in accordance with the company's surety business model to assist in meeting projected profitability and expense goals. You will serve as lead underwriter for assigned region as front line for either the commercial or contract departments or both. The position supports the Regional Surety Manager in balancing the needs to achieve budgeted financial results through specific marketing and production efforts along with sound underwriting practices in an effort to produce profitable results. You will have front line responsibility for assigned agents and accounts and will assist in the training and development of less experienced underwriters and trainees.

Responsibilities

In this position you will:

  • Underwrites, assesses and manages assigned portfolio of accounts with little or no supervision by his/her Manager.
  • Understands and executes personal and branch objectives and strategies in an effort to produce budgeted results.
  • Develops and leverages productive agency/client relationships through a high level of visibility with agents, brokers and clients in support of business objectives.
  • Plans and executes effective regular travel to develop and enhance new and existing producer and account relationships; Visits new and existing accounts.
  • Communicates acceptance or rejection of new and existing accounts while working towards establishing and enhancing the Company's brand.
  • Accountable for accurate underwriting documentation/information in account management systems and adherence to documentation standards and ensures accuracy and integrity of all information contained in account files, and keeps them up to date.
  • Actively keeps management apprised of issues of importance to the Branch and to the Company.
  • May assist or be directly responsible in the development, mentoring/coaching or supervision of less experienced Underwriters, or Underwriting Trainees, as determined by his/her Manager

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Accounting, or related field
  • 5 years or more of experience working with surety products
  • Demonstrates the ability to read, analyze, discuss and interpret financial statements, bond forms, contract documents and government regulations and reach appropriate risk assessment conclusions.
  • Entrepreneurial skill set, excellent marketing, negotiating and communication skills
  • Successful track record of developing and maintaining strong relationships with agents/brokers
  • Ability to think strategically and function tactically
  • Exceptional communication skills that energize and engage brokers, clients and colleagues and the ability to convey a vision and client-focused solutions
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Willingness to travel up to 40%

The Company is open to considering candidates in numerous locations, including New York City (NYC), Princeton, and Philadelphia. The salary range posted below reflects market variations across various locations. This role is designated for either NYC, Princeton, Philadelphia, or Remote and reflects multiple geographies. The offer will be adjusted per geography.

The base salary range anticipated for this position is $113,400-$269,200, plus opportunity for company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay. In addition, the company makes available a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, 401k match, retirement savings plan, paid holidays and paid time off (PTO).

The salary estimate is adjusted to reflect the varying market conditions across different locations, with the with the higher end being more aligned with the NYC job market. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range.
