POSITION SPECIFICS

The Materials Research Institute (MRI) is seeking an Applications Developer to enhance theLifetime Sample Tracking Tool (LiST)used by the2D Crystal Consortium - Materials Innovation Platform (2DCC-MIP)at Penn State. This role will focus on adapting LiST to support the specific data management needs of3DFeM2, a research initiative focused on 3D ferromagnetic materials.

The 3DFeM2 center is a multi-university team including The Pennsylvania State University, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, The University of Notre Dame, University of Maryland, University of Pennsylvania, University of Tennessee - Knoxville, and University of Virginia, in partnership with Sandia National Labs, Brookhaven National Lab, and Oak Ridge National Lab.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a materials-processing and synthesis databaseto support efficient data logging, sharing, analysis, and project tracking for 3DFeM2.
  • Evaluate and enhance existing LiST functionalityto meet 3DFeM2 requirements, including customizing and integrating new features.
  • Collaborate with the LiST development teamto ensure the tool supports both 3DFeM2 and 2DCC-MIP goals.
  • Coordinate with external 3DFeM2 research groupsto integrate their data, tools, and workflows into the LiST system.

Specific Task Areas:

  • Build acomprehensive materials lifetime tracking databasethat logs every stage of a sample's lifecycle-from substrate to storage-including splitting, shipping, processing, characterization, and device synthesis.
  • Createuser-friendly toolsfor data input and tracking over time and across projects.
  • Ensuresimple user access and input interfaces.
  • ProvideAPI accessto data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • IntegrateAI toolsfor data discovery, visualization, and analysis, and support autonomous synthesis workflows.
  • Continuouslyevaluate and improve the LiST codebaseto align with shared data goals of 3DFeM2 and 2DCC-MIP.

Skills and Experience:

  • A degree inComputer Science, Information Science and Technology, or a related technical field.
  • Preferred: Familiarity withscientific instrumentationormaterials datain fields such as Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Chemistry.
  • Experience withlab-level softwarefor managing research data is a plus.
  • Strongcommunication skillsand the ability to work in a collaborative, externally facing team environment.
  • Willingness tointerface with facility managersat Penn State and partner institutions.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $76,700.00 - $115,100.00.
