Job Summary

The Dietitian Specialist I plans, directs, and coordinates daily operations for multiple school kitchens within the Milwaukee Public School District. This position exercises direct authority over nutrition technicians, food service managers, and food service assistants in schools assigned to the individual to ensure compliance with USDA, DPI, department processes, as well as the directives, policies, and procedures set by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors. Program assignments are determined by the Department Director and may change based on the needs of the Department.

Qualifications

  • A bachelors degree in Dietetics, Food Service, or a related field from an accredited program.
  • Registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Certified Dietitian with the State of Wisconsin.
  • Required minimum of two years experience in a directly related field.
  • Required minimum of two years; experience working in a supervisory position.
  • Valid drivers license and reliable transportation for travel to and from various school sites.
  • ServSafe Certified within one year of employment.
Responsibilities

  • Monitors daily operations of meal programming with a focus on staffing, sanitary food handling (preparation, serving, dishwashing, storage), production, and meal quality
  • Ensures compliance with USDA, DPI, and other regulatory agencies as it relates to meal service, programming, claiming, and other reporting requirements under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) and/or other meal service programs
  • Performs a wide variety of related activities in support of the nutrition service program, which may include attending committee meetings, spearheading grant-funded projects, and/or carrying out special initiatives as assigned by the Board, District, or Department
  • Manages site-based nutrition staff at assigned schools; responsible for monitoring performance, providing guidance, offering coaching/support, training, completing evaluations, and handling personnel issues
  • Supervises assigned Nutrition Technician(s); responsible for monitoring performance, providing guidance, training, completing evaluations, and supporting personnel issues
  • Determines the most efficient and economical type of food service according to participation, facility constraints, time available, and labor
  • Acts as coordinator for assigned projects, programs, and program components, which may include NSLP, CACFP, SFSP, FFVP, special dietary needs, contracts, menu creation, procurement, kitchen equipment, central kitchen deliveries, staffing, training, etc.
  • Supports employee recruitment and retention through the planning of and active participation in job fairs, candidate interviews, training workshops, and disciplinary processes
  • Works collaboratively with department and district staff to support the MPS Strategic Plan
  • Performs other Duties as assigned
