Job Summary

The Communications Specialist independently manages a comprehensive communications program for the Department of Neurology, addressing moderately complex communication needs. The role encompasses a wide range of written, visual, digital, and electronic communications, serving both internal and external audiences. The Communications Specialist works closely with the chair's office, department leadership, and central administration to develop and execute strategic communication and branding initiatives that support departmental priorities. The role includes designing and implementing a multidisciplinary communications strategy aligned with key organizational goals. Responsibilities span multiple areas, including content creation, digital media, internal messaging, and stakeholder engagement. The incumbent also leads cross-functional projects, ensuring timely delivery and consistent messaging across all platforms. In addition, the role plays a central part in event planning and execution: managing logistics, coordinating with vendors, and overseeing follow-up communications to enhance departmental visibility, community, and engagement.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $87,200 - $130,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a large, multi-site academic department within the School of Medicine, with a mission that spans clinical care, research, and education. We are proud to be affiliated with the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences and to provide neurologic care and conduct research across numerous sites in San Francisco-including Mission Bay, Parnassus, Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG), China Basin, the San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC), and the Gladstone Institutes-as well as in the Greater Bay Area through UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland and satellite clinics in San Mateo, Marin County, and beyond.

The Department comprises 17 administrative divisions and delivers world-class care across 11 clinical subspecialties. We currently have nearly 75 active clinical trials and, as of July 2024, our team includes 296 faculty members, 115 non-faculty academic employees, 453 staff members, and 210 clinical and postdoctoral trainees.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Exceptional writing skills with the ability to craft clear, compelling, and audience-appropriate content across a variety of formats, including newsletters, e-mail, web content, and high-impact printed communications.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to lead complex communication initiatives from concept to execution, manage competing deadlines, coordinate across teams, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality outputs.
  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite for designing digital and print materials

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications
  • Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
  • Working knowledge of Smartsheet
