Job Summary

Drives a heavy duty semi-tractor (80,000# Gross Vehicle Weight) (G.V.W.) equipped with a hydraulic crane and extending boom to 47 feet and a lifting capacity of 25,000# with proper load line revving. Also, pulls semi-trailers with material to service centers and job sites. In addition,uses the hydraulic crane to load and unload materials, works with and assists various groups with a variety of lifting and hauling services. Drives a heavy duty semi-tractor (160,000# Gross Vehicle Weight) (G.V.W.), and trailer combination to transport electrical power equipment, heavy materials, and other equipment up to 60 tons in total weight which exceeds legal loading and must have special permits to travel in escorted convoy. Observes overhead clearances and road axle weight limitations on over-sized equipment to avoid damage to structures, wires, and/or roads and bridges. Works with other personnel in the loading and unloading of over-sized equipment. Drives a heavy duty semi-tractor (80,000# Gross Vehicle Weight) (G.V.W.),stake truck and appliance vans equipped with hydraulically operated lift gates and pintle hooks. Makes decisions and takes action for the proper and safe loading, unloading and transporting of stock and non-stock materials and various equipment in addition to hazardous material to and from service centers, power plants, sub-stations and job site locations. Must maintain a vaolid Chauffers and Commercial Drivers License "A" with endorsements for double and triple trailers, tank vehicle carrying hazardous materials and air brake certification. Performs majority of duties independent of direct supervision and must also comply with all Company policies, Department of Transportation, Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act, Occupational Safety Health Act, and Hazardous Material Regulations. Directs and is responsible for the work of helpers, as assigned. Completes and submits all required documents such as manifests, truck reports, routing documents, vehicle repair requests, and pre and post trip vehicle inspection reports. Services and makes minor repairs to assigned vehicles. THIS JOB WILL COMPLY WITH DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORATION (DOT) DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING

Key Accountabilities
  • Drives and operates a semi-tractor trailer combination (80,000 Gross Vehicle Weight) (G.V.W.) equipped with a hydraulic crane and outriggers (25,000 capacity) must be able to identify and calculate the weight of any object to be lifted with the hydraulic crane. In addition, must be able to determine and calculate such critical factors such as load line, crane working range, crane boom radius, boom angle, boom length, block and sling weights, and load charts to make a safe lift within the hydraulic crane's operating ranges. It may be necessary to perform multi-part revving of the hoist line to facilitate the lift.
  • Furthermore, it is the sole responsibiliy of the hydraulic crane operator to ensure that the lift is performed within the safe working limits of the htdraulic crane, therefore, refusing to make unsafe lifts. Also, directs and is responsible for the work of helpers as assigned.
  • Drives a semi-tractor 160,000 Gross Vehicle Weight (G.V. W.) and a lowboy trailer combination for hauling transformers, electrical power equipment, heavy materials and other equipment up to 60 tons in total weight. Transports loads exceeding legal weights and must abide by the terms and conditions of the permit. Coordinates action with the escort to maneuver around traffic lights, reilroad crossing signals, and tree limbs so they do not catch on top of the unit being transported. Must observe the road, watch for holes, rocks, and raised railroad crossings so the trailer will not bottom out on the obstruction. Travels carefully through unstable road conditions while backing and positioning trailer in and around sub-stations;use planking to support trailer wheels when necessary. Observes roadway clearances and vehicle traffic while using most of a highway intersection in making a turn. Drives semi-tractor and stake truck with pintle hook to tow, place, position and level portable sub- stations as required. Also, drives gasoline and diesel tanker trucks; fills at refinery and delivers fuel to job sites and service centers to dispense. Drives semi-tractor to haul up to 20,000 and 9,600 gallon bulk oil tanker trailers with air operated lifting axles.
  • Makes decisions and takes action to ensure safe loading, unloading and transport of bulk tanker vehicles. Drives a semi-tractor (80,000 Gross Vehicle Weight) (G.V.W.) and trailer combination. Also hauls a pole trailer that may have a load that exceeds the legal length and require special transport permits and flagman escort to follow the move. Also drives and operates a stake truck and appliance van equipped with hydraulically operated lift gate and pintle hooks.
  • Makes decisions and takes action to ensure the safe loading, unloading and transport of materials, various equipment, and hazardous material to and from service centers, satellite locations, power plants, vendor and job site locations. Operates outriggers to provide stability while lifting, placing, or setting such items as poles, pad mount transformers, pole top transformers, swith gear, capacitors, structural steel, steel pipe, rigging material, or any other type of material that can be safely lifted.
  • Performs pre and post trip vehicle inspections to identify defects or failures in exhaust and suspension systems, steering, lights, brakes, tires and proper loading and securing of materials as required by the Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act.
  • Submits required reports and documentation of inspections. Is responsible that assigned vehicle receives required maintenance and performs minor repairs as required. In addition to preparing and maintaining current, a daily truck report noting such items as starting and stopping mileage, length of time between stops, road conditions and delays. Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of verifiable tractor trailerexperience.
  • This position requires a Class A CDL A w/air brakelicense with no restrictions.
  • Must obtain a CDL - "X" endorsement not later than 3months of the classification entry date.
  • Must obtain a Federal Crane Certification not later than 12 months after the classification entry date.
  • Must meet all DOT standards and other mandated driving requirements.
  • Must agree to a background investigation.
