| Purpose of Job  This position is responsible for providing surgical patient care and related services in the operating room under the supervision of the RN circulator to ensure a safe and efficient surgical environment. Job Functions 
 
 Assesses surgical procedures and patient specific requirements with the circulating nurse to ensure proper preparation of the operating room.Prepares and maintains the sterile operating field for the duration of each surgical procedure.Assists the surgeon as needed during the intra-operative procedure. (Does not include Important Surgical Tasks: opening and closing, dissecting tissue, removing tissue, harvesting grafts, transplanting tissue, administering anesthesia, implanting devices and placing invasive lines).Assists with room turnover in O.R. suites between cases.Performs accurate instrument, sponge, needle, and blade count.Assists a wide variety of surgeries including general, urology, ob/gyn, eye, plastic, cardiovascular, orthopedics, and nose and throat.Participates in quality improvement activities as appropriate to position.Serves as a patient advocate.Interactions with and contributes to the professional development of peers, other health professionals and colleagues.Performs other duties as assigned. 
 Minimum Education/Work Experience  
 
 Graduate from an approved Surgical Technician program OR Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing. 
 Knowledge/Skills/Abilities  
 
 Knowledge of sterile technique and handling of sterile equipmentAbility to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functionsAbility to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned abovePreparation and maintenance of a sterile fieldAbility to work autonomously and as a teamAbility to work and multi-task in a high stress and fact paced environmentAbility to respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populationsAbility to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above 
 License/Certification 
 
 Surgical Technician Certification (obtained within six months of hire) (grandfathered if hired prior to 4/2015)OR Current Practical Nurse licensure in Minnesota or if licensed in another state, a permit from the Minnesota Board of Nursing while the license application is in process.Current CPR certification or must be obtained as soon as possible after hire date 
 Preferred Qualifications 
 
 Previous surgical experience in a hospital or similar healthcare setting
