Position description

Junior Specialist - Stewart Lab

A Junior Specialist position is available in the Stewart Lab to study ocular diseases and their treatment in the Department of Ophthalmology at the UCSF School of Medicine in San Francisco. The Stewart Lab studies retinal and corneal diseases, ocular drug delivery, and proteomics in ocular biospecimens.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service.

The successful candidate will assist with specialized ophthalmic research projects including: corneal ultrasound treatments, corneal confocal microscopy studies, design of ocular tissue permeability testers based on engineering principles and implementation with 3-D printer, harvesting of ocular tissue and cells from primary tissues, ocular cell culture and experimentation with various assays, quantification of ocular therapeutic agents with ELISA and HPLC, RNA extraction from ocular tissues and gene amplification with PCR. The Specialist will also assist with implementation and logistical support for educational programs in the ophthalmic surgical teaching laboratory.

Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience. The candidate must be hard working, passionate about research, and be able to work independently and as part of a team. Applicants should be willing to learn the skills necessary for ophthalmic research, ocular tissue dissection for the collection of viable cells, ocular ultrasound devices, confocal microscopy, PCR, mitochondrial assays, and computer-assisted design are preferred. Applicant must have all basic qualifications met by the time of appointment. Prior experience with laboratory techniques is preferred but not required.
