Microbiology Clinical Laboratory Supervisor
Dayshift Brigham and Women's Hospital Must be ASCP Certified Summary Under the general direction of the Laboratory Managers and Medical Director, this role is responsible for the daily supervision of personnel, including staff orientation, training, competency assessments, and oversight of day-to-day work activities. Does this position require patient care? No Essential Functions Provides daily supervision of technical, clerical, and support staff. Collaborates with Laboratory Managers to plan, organize, assign, and schedule staff duties and responsibilities. Assists technologists in resolving technical issues and interpreting test results. Sets work priorities to ensure timely and efficient completion of tasks. Manages inventory by ordering and maintaining appropriate stock of supplies. Maintains up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and all required documentation. Ensures staff adherence to safety protocols and regulatory policies. Oversees staff orientation, ongoing training, and competency assessments, ensuring team members: Follow all procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, result reporting, and recordkeeping. Maintain records confirming that proficiency testing samples are handled like patient specimens. Adhere to quality control policies and document QC activities, calibrations, and equipment maintenance. Follow established corrective action protocols when test systems fall outside acceptable performance limits. Identify and address test performance issues, or escalate to appropriate supervisory or clinical personnel. Document all corrective actions related to deviations from established performance standards. Education Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology required or Bachelor's Degree Laboratory Sciences required and Other Certificate/Diploma Clinical Laboratory Sciences required Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No Licenses and Credentials Medical Technologist (ASCP) [MLT, MT, MLA, Histologists] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) required Experience lab experience 3-5 years required and Supervisory experience 1-2 years preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - The knowledge, both practical and theoretical, of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise and direct subordinates in action. - Demonstrates advanced level of analytical skills and judgment. - Must have a relatively high level of analytical ability to work with complex instrumentation, resolve technical equipment problems, relate test results to normal and pathological states, and interpret quality control data. - Must have understanding of computer technology and its application to analytical procedures and quality control. - Must have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair, and analytic techniques. - Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations and act appropriately. - Detailed knowledge of applicable federal, state and accreditation requirements. - Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. - Advanced computer skills. - Comprehensive understanding of test principles, equipment operation and computer system operations. - Make appropriate decisions, develop and complete follow-up actions in conjunction with lab leadership. - Must be able to perform as a senior team member, providing direction and guidance to less experienced technologists. - Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols, including communication to lab leadership when issues are identified. - Must be able to perform as a team member. - Excellent interpersonal skills. - Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff, including physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients.
