Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The developing North Carolina A&T PA Program seeks a Student Support Services Specialist to play a crucial role in supporting PA students. They provide guidance, resources, and assistance to help students navigate the academic and professional aspects of their education. This includes everything from admissions and financial aid to career advising and academic support.

This position supports the administration, implementation, and interpterion of university and department policies and procedures regarding admission, financial aid, housing, registrar services, visa services, student life, advising, career counseling, and academic services. It also identifies, clarifies, and helps resolve highly visible or complex issues with substantial significance and impact that may span multiple areas.

This position focuses on managing details and meeting student and faculty expectations. The Department of Physician Assistant Studies is a rapidly growing department, and this position will play a key role in facilitating growth and development.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina A & T State University is a public land grant high research institution that is committed to teaching and learning, scholarly and creative research, and effective engagement and public service. The John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences ( HCHHS) comprises six departments and the School of Nursing. The HCHHS offers the following undergraduate degree programs, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level, HCHHS offers four graduate degree programs including the master's in physician assistant studies ( MSPA), Master of Social Work ( MSW), Master of Science in Health Psychology and Ph.D. in Social Work. Three additional doctoral programs are being developed; Doctor of Nurse Practice ( DNP), PhD in Applied Psychology, and PhD in Sociology. The HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research ( CIHDER), a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health inequities. The HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance the mentoring of trainees, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholastic activity.
The Department of Physician Assistant Studies is a quickly growing department, and this position will play a role in preparing for accreditation and admissions and facilitating growth and development. The North Carolina A&T Physician Assistant program will help to increase accessibility to medical services for the state's growing population while providing affordable healthcare. The program's faculty will successfully prepare students to become competent Physician Assistants, contributing quality care to the workforce through the delivery of foundational knowledge and essential clinical skills. The Department of Physician Assistant Studies is a supportive community of committed faculty and practitioners whose goals are to introduce students to the ideas and concepts relevant to the discipline of medicine and encourage interdisciplinary learning and team-based care.

Duties

  • Manage all student services within the program, including but not limited to academic progress, academic program policies, financial aid, housing, and student life, for all students from matriculation through graduation, along with limited alumni support (primarily enrollment verification).

  • Lead resolution of various program issues and concerns for students, e.g. removing possible barriers to service, collaborating as necessary with team members as well as colleagues within the University community (e.g. registrar, financial aid, housing, Vaden, etc.). Independently develop solutions and liaison with faculty advisers to optimize student outcomes.
  • Evaluate and recommend program eligibility decisions, and review other staff recommendations.
  • Compile and maintain resource lists (primarily for job-related resources) to share with alumni. Present student life information to applicants at interview sessions and in other venues (e.g. other events, webinars) as needed.

Duties

  • Advise and serve as the primary resource for all student life matters listed above for students from matriculation through graduation, guiding them in making appropriate choices and decisions.
  • Provide limited resources and services for applicants and alumni.
  • Reconcile complex issues; analyze diverse transactions from multiple sources.

Duties

  • Guide and counsel students, either directly or via referral, in all student-life-related areas, including but not limited to academic progress, academic program policies, financial aid, housing, etc. from matriculation
  • Work closely with admissions, financial aid, and other student services offices.

  • May provide access to resources for mental and physical health, as well as social support.

Duties

  • Collaborate with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues.
  • Develop and Implement plans for outreach efforts; develop and maintain external community and university liaisons; represent the department and university at meetings and event
  • Enable collaboration to enhance student service offerings.
  • Liaise with other University units as needed in support of students.

Duties

  • Provide advice to students on a range of issues, including, but not limited to, academic progress, academic program policies, career plans, accessibility, community standards, etc., in order to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions. | Advise and serve as a resource for incoming and current students for the full gamut of student services, including but not limited to the areas of academic progress, academic program policies, financial aid, housing, and well-being in order to help them make the most of their education. Provide advice directly or refer students to appropriate entities.
  • Apprise students of research, fellowship, and scholarship opportunities, make recommendations, and may award grants.
  • Connect incoming and current students to nationally sponsored scholarship (or other funding) opportunities.

Duties

  • May oversee, analyze and assist in financial processes and development of budgets. | Perform analysis of and execution on student stipends and other miscellaneous student services transactions as needed, remaining cognizant of budgetary realities.
  • Oversee vendor selection and/or reimbursement and payment processes for student life events such as graduation.
