DESCRIPTION

The Fire Inspector is responsible for performing technical inspections to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes, ordinances, and regulations, as well as promoting fire prevention practices throughout the community. The City of Corona's Fire Department is seeking a detail-oriented, professional individual with a strong sense of public service, a proactive approach to fire prevention, and a commitment to public safety, code compliance, and community well-being.
Knowledge & Education
- Basic fire protection and inspection practices and procedures; federal, state and local fire codes; California Building Code requirements as they pertain to fire safety; national fire safety and prevention standards; hazardous materials handling techniques; public contact techniques; modern office methods and techniques; effective oral and written communications; micro-computer applications to the work.
- A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent, preferably supplemented by college level courses in Fundamentals of Fire Prevention, Fire Protection, Fire Protection Equipment and Systems or closely related course work
Skills & Abilities
- Learn to read, understand and examine plans submitted for buildings, improvements, fire protection systems and other related construction activities pertaining to fire protection; perform on-site inspections and prepare and present correction notices related to deficiencies observed; perform mathematical calculations; understand and follow oral and written instructions; prepare clear and comprehensive records and reports; read and interpret laws, regulations, manuals, and other materials; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
This position is FLSA Non-Exempt, eligible for overtime compensation.

Experience, Licenses, & Special Requirements
- One year of experience in building or fire inspection, plan checking, fire suppression, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Completion of OSFM Prevention 1A,1B, 1C, and 1D is desirable.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain PC 832 within 12 months of appointment.
- A valid Class "C" California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
- BACKGROUND and MEDICAL SCREENING: Successful candidates will be required to pass a background investigation, which may include a polygraph examination, as well as a psychological examination and a comprehensive medical evaluation.

The selection process will consist of a review and evaluation of all applicants' qualifications. Those applicants deemed to possess the most desirable qualifications will be invited to participate in an oral interview. The top scoring candidates from the oral interview will be placed on an eligibility list from which the department may hire.
The eligibility list established from this recruitment may also be used to fill the current and/or additional vacancies throughout the City. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a reference / background check including livescan and pass a pre-employment medical examination (which will include a drug/alcohol screening).

THE ORGANIZATION
The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. Policy making and legislative authority is vested in the City Council, consisting of a Mayor and four Council Members. Members of the City Council are elected by District to a four-year term. The Mayor is selected by the Council and serves as the presiding officer for one year.
The City is organized into the following departments/organizational units: Community Services, City Manager's Office, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Risk Management, Police, Planning & Development, Public Works, and Utilities. Oversight of these departments is divided between the City Manager and an Assistant City Manager.
The City's total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2026 is $422.7 million with a General Fund operating budget of $231.3 million. Corona enjoys a workforce of 935 dedicated employees who provide high-quality services to its residents and visitors each day.
