About the College/Unit/Department
Part of the Division of Student Affairs, University Housing consists of nearly 2.8 million square feet of facilities and is home to more than 9,000 students. The department employs 220 full-time staff members, 21 graduate assistants and 565 undergraduate student workers. As a self-supporting auxiliary, University Housing operates a $59 million budget derived only from student housing fees and other non-state sources.
In support of its mission to provide comfortable, affordable and secure housing options where the academic success and personal growth of residents are encouraged and supported, University Housing engages staff members in competency-based training and students in curriculum-based engagement focused on community building, interpersonal skills, social awareness and responsibility, and well-being.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, formal training programs, or on-the-job training. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent, or the completion of an apprentice or vocational training.
Minimum 4 years of experience as a journeyman level painter in a commercial setting.
Position Summary
This position is for a journey-level worker. Work includes prepping various types of surfaces and then painting, staining, or varnishing. This employee serves a residential program that houses approximately 9,000 students.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Considerable knowledge and skill in the use of tools, equipment, and practices used in the painting trade.
  • Maintain a knowledge of workplace rules and guidelines to stay in compliance with UGA policies and procedures.
  • Have the ability to maintain professional relationships with staff, residence, and various customer groups and demonstrate supportive involvement in the work environment.
  • Have the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Be able to utilize a variety of computer applications in the completion of assigned tasks, including but not limited to the work order system, Microsoft Office, UGA email, and employee websites.
  • Be able to effectively communicate in a professional manner with supervisors, staff, residents, and contractors, and be able to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Physical Demands

  • Climb stairs, ladders and scaffolds, work from a ladder or scaffold.
  • Bend at the waist and knees.
  • Work with arms and hands overhead for extended periods of time.
  • Use hand tools and power tools.
  • Lift and move items at least 50 pounds in weight, both assisted and unassisted.
  • May occasionally perform work related duties outdoors in hot or cold weather.
  • Safely operate a UGA state vehicle as necessary.

Prepping Surface and Painting

  • Clean and prepare surfaces to be painted through the use of sandpaper, steel wool, a scraper, or soap and water.
  • Paint interior and exterior walls and ceilings of buildings with a brush or roller as required; may also varnish, stain, shellac, or otherwise finish desks, doors, cabinets, moldings, floors and walls.
  • Trim windows and doors and caulk cracks.
  • Perform incidental duties such as erecting and moving scaffolds or ladders, washing walls, and cleaning up the area after a job, and cleaning and storing brushes and rollers.
  • Perform summer work assignments including the identification and implementation of special projects. This position may also oversee student/temporary employees on assigned projects.
  • On a daily basis, check on a web-based work order system to receive work orders and close them once finished. Make notes on the work order if necessary.

  • Keep the shop area clean, inventoried, stocked and organized so that supplies can be located by other staff members.
  • Participate in the maintenance after hours on-call program as required.
  • Respond to general maintenance work orders and assist with emergency repairs across University Housing and complete other duties as assigned that are consistent with the purpose and scope of this position.
